72) Substance Induced Possession

a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up: It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying…” (Job 4:12-17)

Ahh, but how can a spirit communicate without the apparatus of speech?

Physically, communication begins and ends as energy patterns in the souls of the sender and receiver. Thoughts can be transmitted without sound waves traveling through air. Ever look deeply into the eyes of your teenage crush?

Psychotic auditory hallucinations are another common expression of this phenomenon. I am not saying that all auditory hallucinations are invariably demonic, simply that the human capacity for hearing thoughts without sound waves being generated is a scientific reality.

It is also possible for a human soul to take it up a notch to temporarily absent his body’s limitations to become conscious of, and active in, the spirit domain.

This capacity, like electrical current, is only obtained through connection of the human spirit with a hyperdimensional spirit – either Almighty God, or a spirit. whose power to effect this was given by Almighty God.

I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last…and the first voice…said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.” (Revelation 1:10-11, 4:1-1)

“a thing was revealed unto Daniel…I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man…as the appearance of lightning…And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved…unto thee am I now sent.” (Daniel 10:1-11)

“…ungodly menwho separate themselves [their souls from their bodies] sensual, having not THE Spirit [but rather a lesser empowering spirit or spirits].” (Jude 4,17)

As with sexual entrancement, substance use causing a reduced or total loss of mind control is a significant open door to evil spirits.

Certain plants have long been known to humans as having psychoactive effects—they produce changes in a person’s thoughts, sensations, and behavior…People viewed these substances as sources of the sacred and spiritual realms.

These plants were generally used in community rituals…Plants such as the psilocybin mushrooms, iboga, ayahuasca, datura, betel, and kava served…to help a person achieve an experience of the sacred.

As Richard Schultes and Albert Hofmann explain in Plants of the Gods (2002), mushrooms that contain psilocybin, a hallucinogen, produce such dramatic effects that people have described them as “foods of the gods” and “voices of the gods.” In many prehistoric cult practices, hallucinogenic mushrooms served…to contact powerful spiritual forces…leading them toward self-transformation…

A word used by Michael Winkelman, “psychointegration,” characterizes the common effects of substances called hallucinogens and psychedelics…in which the human brain produces brain waves…that results in a feeling of unity. Psychointegrators were central to many shamanic practices…to enable them to contact spirits….

The root of the iboga plant (Tabernanthe iboga) is a stimulant and hallucinogen…Healers and sorcerers have used iboga to achieve knowledge of the divine. In Africa, the…Bwiti cult used iboga to contact and affirm their relationship with their ancestors…

Native groups of northern Mexico (for example, the Huichol and the Tarahumara) also have a long history of peyote use. Peyote [a cactus] contains mescaline, a substance that has both stimulant and hallucinogenic effects…promotes feelings of spirituality and unity…

Ayahuasca is a combination of two plants, Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis. South American tribes used ayahuasca for various purposes: contacting spirits of the dead, achieving clairvoyance, making diagnoses, making prophecies, and healing…groups in the rural Amazonian basin take ayahuasca in collective adult rituals to strengthen group cohesion and identity…Ayahuasca traditions have also spread to urban areas, where many people use the drug to cope with anxiety and stress. Several Christian churches in Brazil consider ayahuasca a sacrament. In the United States, these churches are involved in legal battles over freedom of religion involving use of the drug for religious purposes.

Native Americans used datura to produce…altered states of consciousness that could last from two to three weeks…often involved a death-and-rebirth experience…loses touch with reality…In Africa, the Shangana-Tsonga of Mozambique used datura in fertility initiations for girls to produce visions of the fertility god…

The most common traditional drugs in the Pacific Islands were kava and betel. Kava is a sedative beverage made from the root of Pipermethysticum that produces a dreamlike state similar to that produced by mild hallucinogens. Betel is a stimulant made from Piper betel and Areca catechu and other ingredients…betel can cause psychotic reactions.

Published 2020 by The Lancet: Cannabis is one of the most widely used psychoactive substances worldwide, with 6–7% of the population in Europe and 15% of the population in the USA using it each year. There is a global trend towards decriminalisation and legalisation, with 11 US states, Canada, and Uruguay now permitting the sale and recreational use of cannabis. Given the projected increase in rates of cannabis use, the increasing potency of cannabis and cannabis-based products, and the burgeoning interest in the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids, it is timely to assess the psychiatric effects of cannabis constituents.

Published February 2024 by the Centers for Disease Control / CDC

  • Cannabis is the most commonly used federally illegal drug in the United States; 52.5 million people, or about 19% of Americans, used it at least once in 2021.1
  • Recent research estimated that approximately 3 in 10 people who use cannabis have cannabis use disorder.2
  • The risk of developing cannabis use disorder is even greater for people who begin to use it before age 18.3
  • Cannabis use directly affects the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, decision-making, coordination, emotion, and reaction time.45
  • Infants, children, and teens (who still have developing brains) are especially susceptible to the adverse effects of cannabis.45
  • Long-term or frequent cannabis use has been linked to increased risk of psychosis or schizophrenia in some users.6

Among the most common long-term mental health issues associated with drug abuse and addiction are:

  • Depression: There is a clear association between substance abuse and depression, as well as other mood disorders.
  • Anxiety: Addiction is also associated with anxiety and panic disorders.Again, the cause is difficult to discern and can be different among individuals. For one person, they could develop a pattern of abuse after using drugs (e.g. benzodiazepines like Xanax) to cope with their symptoms. Another person could have a long-standing pattern of drug abuse and consequently develop anxiety problems. Many substances, particularly stimulants like cocaine, can cause anxiety.4 Other drugs, like benzodiazepines, can bring about increased anxiety as part of their withdrawal syndromes.5
  • Paranoia: Some drugs, like cocaine and marijuana, can cause feelings of paranoia that may be amplified with long-term misuse.
