136) The Vials Of Wrath Rev 16…

The Greek word φιάλη (phiálē) is translated in the King James Bible as “vial”. We can recognize its transliteration from the pronunciation of the Greek word.

But this doesn’t mean that two thousands of years later our transliteration applies. Is it a larger object like bowl as translated in other Bible versions, or a small cylinder used to secret a strong medicine or poison? Since this Greek word is found only in this circumstance in Revelation, we can’t visualize it by seeing how it’s used in another setting in the gospels or letters.

We are forced to drill down into the word itself. Etymology. According to  Beekes, the root word άλη is found in σκυτ-άλη (staff, stem, handle) and γύ-αλον (hollowed space). OK., that’s no help. Still a variety of applications.

Drilling down further to hit pay dirt, Beekes states this word is probably from Pre-Greek. That explains its broad and divergent applications developed over time, requiring us to search ancient uses of this word. In order to understand what the Greek word φιάλη (phiálē) means, we have to place it in its most ancient historical and cultural context.

The Pre-Greek substrate (or Pre-Greek substratum) consists of the unknown pre-Indo-European language(s) spoken in prehistoric Greece before the coming of the Proto-Greek language in the Greek peninsula during the Bronze Age

For instance, the name of the mount Parnassos in Greece has been interpreted as the Luwian parna- (‘house’) attached to the possessive suffix -ssa-.

some pre-Greek loanwords still remain incompatible with Indo-European phonology while showing certain recurrent patterns that set them apart from other languages. This likely indicates that “one language, or a group of closely related dialects or languages” was the source of another, possibly earlier, layer of pre-Indo-European loanwords in the region.

I’ve pulled out just the essential points of this academic treatise, not to hide anything that contradicts my train of thought, but to get to the point.

Which is, the word pronounced phiálē in Classical Greek and vial in English comes from the most ancient times when the gods ruled men who were obsessed with survival by placating them.

In other words, sacrificial rites.

We can logically deduce that John’s original audience understood the implement named φιάλη. Not only was it a common feature in the world at large, the Jews themselves had continued to practice their own version of sacrificial rites until they at destruction of the temple in 70 AD.

We can also logically deduce that previous Hebrew scripture continues to elucidate mysteries to newcomers to the law of Moses, so that’s where we should look for the form and function of φιάλη.

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, sayingAccording to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it…thou shalt make the dishes…spoons…and bowls.” (Exodus 25)

Spoons. That’s what fits the entire spectrum of meanings for φιάλη – a handle with a hollowed out space for handling small amounts.

The examples shown are spoons used for ritual use in India today. Given their use in serving up expensive spices, it fits that they have the shape of a measuring spoon rather than a shallow hollow for sipping liquids.

A large number of ordinary objects produced especially for the god have been used in the daily worship of divine statues. The most complete and best described rites were those practiced in ancient Assyria and Egypt and those still observed in the Vaishnavite temples of southeastern India. Such objects are identical in form to those ordinarily in domestic use…bowls, cups, and pitchers…pots and flasks for salves and perfumes…

In the case of YHVH’s table service, the spoons are used to transfer sweet smelling incense from its storage container to the censer for burning.

“Take you censers…And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD…Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense.” (Numbers 16:17,46)

Like Korah and his groupies, the early Christian church assumed this function from YHVH’s anointed Levitical priests.

Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.” (Jude 1:10-18)

The motif of smoke rising up to God is present throughout history. Mixed in with smoke is a specific scent, like a pheromone, relaying its “smoke signal” message to God. We can understand this as perfume setting the mood inviting union, or a feast of roasted meat transferring the life of the flesh.

The odor of the righteous sacrifices pleasing to God are not just the type of incense or sacrificial animals.

Neither is it solely YHVH’s Chosen Savior known as Jesus Christ.

“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children…as [his child] Christ…hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”

These sweet savours to God include Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son through faith in YHVH’s promises to him, and Isaac’s faith to submit to his father’s murderous behavior through his own faith in YHVH taught to him by Abraham, not only in word but in deed.

These also include the multitude of saints demonstrating faith in YHVH’s promise of eternal life by choosing mortal death over conversion to a false god.

“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ / His Chosen Savior [willingly uniting with him in his redemptive death]

    • in them that are saved…the savour of [mortal] life unto [eternal] life
    • and in them that perish…the savour of death unto death.” (II Corinthians 2:15-16)

When we overlay this smoke motif on Revelation’s actions we find that what is confusing to many people falls into a consistent pattern.

The seal, trumpet, and bowl judgments are introduced in chapters 6, 8, and 15 of Revelation. Each judgment is broken up into seven distinct acts that bring destruction to the earth and those who are alive at that time. The number seven in the Bible often refers to perfection and/or completeness, and the fact that there are three categories of judgments – perhaps corresponding to the Trinity –may indicate that these are judgments from the triune God and represent His full and complete wrath upon a rebellious world.

Often? Perhaps? May? This is not a subject on which one should stake their future on an uncertain teacher. Oh, wait. “CompellingTruth.org needs your support. Donate”  OK, so the flow of energy is not from this organization but to this organization.

The flow of energy is another motif present throughout Revelation that clarifies who is behind apparently repetitive actions.

Back in John’s day paganism was the world view, so John didn’t have to explain the basics in Revelation. But ever since he founding of America when humanism took front and center, this situation no longer holds true. I have found that if I want to understand the mindset of the pagan gods, I need to read up on them.

American Gods (2001) is a fantasy novel by British author Neil Gaiman incorporating various strands of ancient and modern mythology.

The theme of the story is the Old Gods’ deterioration in status and influence over Americans. Like aging movie stars, the Old God’s powers have waned in as their believers transferred their worship to the New Gods – manifestations of modern life and technology, such as the Internet.

The conflict in the story is that Odin / Wedn (from which we get Wednesday) is recruiting American manifestations of the Old Gods to participate in a battle against the New American Gods. One assumes this is to destroy them, right?

Well, not quite. Remember, energy – of which gods are constituted – can’t be destroyed. It can only be transformed / transferred.

The plot of the story is that Low Key Lyesmith, i.e. Loki Lies  maker and Odin have been working a “two-man con“. Loki set up the battle between the New and Old Gods as a sacrifice to Odin, restoring Odin’s power, while also allowing Loki to feed on the chaos of the battle. Odin and Loki are the only winners in this battle. All the rest of the New and Old gods were suckered.

The account of America Gods is validated by Holy Scripture.

if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee…neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee…be not snared by following them…enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods?…their gods shall be a snare unto you…The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.”

Only YHVH the Infinite Singularity can draw energy and substance from an unlimited supply.

The Adversary loses energy every time he acts and has to replenish his stores from existing supplies owned by his enemy.

  • YHVH initiates Action! which is followed by (an attempted but not really)
  • Equal but Opposite Reaction! by the Adversary.

This template allows us to clearly recognize the players in a war where visibility is rapidly lost in clouds of smoke. For the purposes of this expose I begin with the post-flood world history.

  1. Action! YHVH’s Covenant not to destroy the earth and every living thing. “And [after the flood] Noah…took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again…smite any more every thing living, as I have done.” (Genesis 8:20-22)
    1. Reaction: When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved. (Matthew 24:15-22)
  2. Action! YHVH’s Covenant establishing his People, Places and Things, including “thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon…Aaron [throughout time via his genes] shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning…And at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon…it is most holy unto the LORD.” (Exodus 30)
    1. Reaction: Destruction of YHVH’s People, Places and Things
      1. Incarnation 1: the king of the north shall come…and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed…but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found. Darn! Failed!
      2. Try again: Incarnation 2: Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed. Curses! Foiled again!
      3. Try again: Incarnation 3: And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour [glory of battle] of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries…and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall…have indignation against the holy covenant…and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant
  3. Action! BUT the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: “thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.” (II Corinthians 2:14)
    1. Reaction: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days…to try them, and to purge, and to make them white  because it is yet for a time appointed….[Mimicking YHVH] He shall stretch forth his hand…he shall have power…therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet HE shall come to his end, and none shall help him. And at that time…there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time…But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end:” (Daniel 11-12)
  4. Action! a woman…brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne…I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, NOW is come salvation!, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Revelation 12 flashback)
    1. Reaction: And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ…the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death…Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. (Daniel 11, Revelation 2)
  5. Action! And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals…Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? [i.e. powerful enough to win the battles that will result from doin so?]…behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed [already won the battle to bring about the end of Satan’s rule] for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. (Revelation 5)
    1. Reaction: Destruction of as many humans as possible.
      1. the first seal…conquer.
      2. the second seal…they should kill one another.
      3. the third seal…to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
      4. the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
      5. the sixth seal…the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together from some tremendous atmospheric event. (Revelation 6)
  6. Action! the seventh seal – the suspense is literally killing – angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
    1. Reaction: Satan’s crippled response to each trumpet call to war.
      1. hail and fire mingled with blood, were cast upon the earth [clearly from above the earth]: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
      2. a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died;
      3. a great star from heaven fell upon the third part of the rivers…became wormwood…and many men died
      4. the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
      5. a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and…he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened [yet more] by reason of the smoke of the pit.And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth…And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
      6. And the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates…were loosed…to slay the third part of men…out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed (Revelation 8-9)
  7. Action! I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven…he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth [in triumph to the prey]: 19323a236bcbe2d810f15264944acd0eand when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices….and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not. [The response is not going to happen.] And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth…and eat it up [incorporate it into your very being]…Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings. (Revelation 10)
    1. Reaction: I stood upon the sand [boundary] of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea…And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world…worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?…And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God…And it was given unto him to make war with the saintsAnd all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13)
  8. Action! And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth…If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand…shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night…Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth…that they may rest…(Revelation 14:6-13)I will give power unto my two [human] witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth…And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them…And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves…And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and…they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them…and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven….And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 11)…And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and 1) in his hand a sharp sickle…And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped [of God’s saints]. 2) And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs…And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.(Revelation 14:14-20, 16:1)

And from here on out there is no chance for the Adversary to react.

YHVH is the Singularity, remember?. Every force that the Adversary has thrown at him, including and especially the life forces of his saints – get that! – has not been wasted as destruction of mass or chaos. It has been absorbed back into the Singularity.

There is some critical mass like in an atomic bomb, only in this case the number of the remnant of believers, at which YHVH unleashes holy terror onto the Adversary and his gruesome creatures. And also as in an atomic bomb, the power of the universe is packaged small.

All it takes is a teaspoonful scattered with a flick of the wrist.

Now do we get it? The literary φιάλη (phiálē) is the perfect imagery of the immense power at YHVH’s disposal! Note how much less effort was expended by YHVH than by the Adversary, and how much more damage was inflicted from the vials than from the Adversary’s reactions to the trumpet calls to war.

  1. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
  2. And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
  3. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
  4. And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
  5. And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
  6. And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared…And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
  7. And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

And the future is back to the beginning – Cain heading out to the East from Eden, Nimrod re-establishing the pre-flood worship of Marduk at the Tower of Babel, the city of Babylon in what is currently known as Iraq drawing every emperor to her.

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war…he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean…he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.” (Revelation 19:11-16)

The armies of the dead but resurrected in heaven that follow him back to earth in this hyper dimensional battle went through boot camp on earth. You can’t seriously think that anyone who quailed at the idea of being scorned by friends and family, or losing a job, let alone losing their mortal existence, could possibly follow The Word of God with the power of creation into battle?!

The most important motif of God’s “teaspoons” of wrath in Revelation in God’s choice of weapon against Satan is not energy.

It’s us.

We are as small and insignificant as a vial.

  • “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise;
  • and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
  • And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen,
  • yea, and things which are not / mortally dead to bring to nought things that are / hyperdimensionally eternal. (I Corinthians 1:27-28)

John’s message to us in Revelation is that WE – united with Almighty God – can take EVERYTHING that the Adversary throws at us KNOWING that OUR CREATOR AND SUSTAINER IS SHOWING OFF HIS POWER THROUGH US!

Be strong and of a good courage…be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee…This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success…Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:6-9)
