17) Existential Theories Are Works In Progress

Current theories on how the universe consists are based on concepts – NOT PROVEN  laws – of physics developed by Isaac Newton about 400 years ago. After observing an apple fall from a tree. Not much of a basis for a scientific “law” of gravity, you’d think..

Yet for 400 years this “law”, and others like it, were accepted as the required alternative to a biblical explanation of a God who created and sustains our world.

Even today, the genius scientists of our time equipped with most technological instruments, greatest financial resources world-wide provided by competing governments employing huge numbers of staff, can’t explain gravity and the other forces maintaining a stable world.

There is no theory of gravity that fully explains the observed effects of gravity.

Sir Isaac Newton’s explanation of how it works was based on the [mechanical] observations that were available at his time, including the falling of objects of mass as apples on or near to the Earth’s surface, and the orbits of the Planets and the Moon. He assumed that there was a force from the Sun and the Earth and other large bodies…

Professor Albert Einstein…produced a General Theory of Relativity that described the movement of bodies in an energy field causing gravity effects. It does not cover all observed gravity and has to be tweaked…by a Cosmological Constant.

The latest theory, by a Professor Verlinde, is being studied and shows some promise, but it is strictly theoretical and will be difficult to understand since it is based on the existence of energy not proven to exist. 

Gravity: It’s Only a Theory

The Universal Theory of Gravity is often taught in schools as a fact, when in fact it is not even a good theory…For example, “the moon goes around the earth.” If the theory of gravity were true, it would show that the sun’s gravitational force on the moon is much stronger than the earth’s gravitational force on the moon, so the moon would go around the sun. Anybody can look up at night and see the obvious gaps in gravity theory.

The existence of tides is often taken as a proof of gravity, but this is logically flawed. Because if the moon’s “gravity” were responsible for a bulge underneath it, then how can anyone explain a high tide on the opposite side of the earth at the same time? Anyone can observe that there are two — not one — high tides every day…

astronomers, who seem to have a fetish for gravity, tell us that the moon rotates on its axis but at the same time it always presents the same face to the earth. This is patently absurd. Moreover, if gravity were working on the early earth, then earth would have been bombarded out of existence by falling asteroids, meteors, comets, and other space junk…Since everything in the Universe tends to disorder according to the Second Law [of Thermodynamics], orderly orbits are impossible.

Why Is Gravity Fine Tuned?

The moment of the universe’s birth created both matter and an expanding space-time in which this matter could exist. While gravity pulled the matter together, the expansion of space drew particles of matter apart – and the further apart they drifted, the weaker their mutual attraction became.

It turns out that the struggle between these two was balanced on a knife-edge. If the expansion of space had overwhelmed the pull of gravity in the newborn universe, stars, galaxies and humans would never have been able to form. If, on the other hand, gravity had been much stronger, stars and galaxies might have formed, but they would have quickly collapsed in on themselves and each other. What’s more, the gravitational distortion of space-time would have folded up the universe in a big crunch. Our cosmic history could have been over by now.

Only the middle ground, where the expansion and the gravitational strength balance to within 1 part in 1015 at 1 second after the big bang, allows life to form. That is down to the size of the gravitational constant G, also known as Big G.

G is the least well-defined of all the constants of nature.

Does life need gravity?

Plants certainly do…rooted plants have gravity sensors: plumb lines, effectively, that give them a sense of up or down. Turn a plant pot on its side and you’ll find that the roots continue to grow towards the centre of the Earth.

Grown in space, plants show disoriented roots that don’t get the best access to nutrients and water. Poor starch production is one of a number of adverse effects of this. Some seeds grown in microgravity even produce plants in which the genes are expressed differently from normal.

Animals suffer a raft of problems if they are deprived of gravity – though we don’t yet know the whole story. “We’ve had animal life in space for half a century, but we’ve yet to have a single mammal go through its life cycle…”

Can we counter gravity?

Though the notion of building a gravity shield has a long history, no one has yet managed to do it.

Quantum mechanics and relativity, our two most successful theories of how the world works, both seem strangely at odds with the everyday world as we experience it – and with each other.

Quantum theory, which describes how things behave at the subatomic level, is certainly weird. Quantum objects can simultaneously be in two locations, or move in different directions.

Relativity is, if anything, worse. We can use it to describe gently curving space-time, but the equations turn to nonsense in the extreme conditions found at the heart of a black hole or the beginning of the universe.

From a physicist’s point of view, the big problem is that no one has figured out how quantum theory and relativity fit together to make a quantum theory. There has to be a better theory out there, one that describes how and why everything works, from subatomic to cosmological scales, but it is proving extraordinarily elusive.

In 1905 Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity established beyond a doubt that both [electricity and magnetism] are aspects of one common phenomenon. At a practical level, however, electric and magnetic forces behave quite differently and are described by different equations.

During the mid-20th century, physicists developed the Standard Model, which has been called the “theory of almost everything.” It describes the inter-actions of all known subatomic particles and three of the four fundamental forces:

  1. electromagnetism
  2. the strong and
  3. weak nuclear forces…

For sure that was one of the first lessons my daughter was taught in kindergarten.]

  • We know that while studying the weak nuclear forces the parity of the particle plays a very important role. But the weak nuclear force violates the parity….

  • The weak interactions also violate CPT conservation.

The strong force was first proposed to explain why atomic nuclei do not fly apart. It seemed that they would do so due to the repulsive electromagnetic force between the positively charged protons located in the nucleus…..

A theory of everything (TOE) is a hypothetical framework explaining all known physical phenomena in the universe. In other words, how do energy and mass convert to one another through the application of force? Researchers have searched for such a model ever since the development of quantum mechanics and Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity in the early 20th century.

The outstanding question of the four [unknown] fundamental forces is whether they’re actually manifestations of just a single great force of the universe. If so, each of them should be able to merge with the others, and there’s already evidence that they can.

  1. Physicists…won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 for unifying the electromagnetic force with the weak force to form the concept of the electroweak force.
  2. Physicists…aim to unite the electroweak force with the strong force to define an electronuclear force, which models have predicted but resarchers have not yet observed.
  3. The final piece of the puzzle would then require unifying gravity with the electronuclear force to develop a theoretical framework that could explain the entire universe.

[O]ne of the simplest but most powerful equations ever to be written down, E = mc2...

What this equation means is thoroughly world-changing. As Einstein himself put it:

Energy can be used to make mass out of nothing… except pure energy

But just as flour and milk just sit there in the kitchen until acted upon by stirring and pouring and flipping to make pancakes, no conversion from energy to mass or vice versa can happen in the universe until acted upon by a force.

That Force, according to Einstein’s equation, is c2, where c is postulated to be the fastest force in the universe – the speed of light, “the upper limit for the speed at which conventional matter or energy (and thus any signal carrying information) can travel through space”. Einstein’s equation then multiplies this upper extremity by itself to be able to be manipulated in a mathematical equation, but effectively this creates an Infinite Force, capable of overriding information-carrying signals, described in its essence as “Word”.

“In the beginning was the Word / the Force / c2, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…All things were made by him / God, and without him was not anything made that was made / E converted to mass. In him was life / energy…And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” (John 1:1-14)

The acknowledgment of the personhood of the Word ineluctably requires the acknowledgment of his possession of all that this Unmoved Mover designed, created, sustains – and may destroy at will. Keeping the physical world at an impersonal level allows humans to imagine they can grasp control of this ultimate Force of Creation and Destruction.

The Large Hadron Collider is where the Force driving the interaction of energy and matter is studied at the most basic level.

This is fundamental science at its most basic.

The Higgs boson is sometimes referred to as the “God Particle,” much to the chagrin of scientists…it signals the existence of the Higgs field, an invisible energy field present throughout the universe that imbues other particles with mass…The Higgs field emerged at the birth of the universe.

The explanation of

1. how an infinite Singularity produced measurable mass, time and space

2. without ceasing to exist as infinity

3. which would have eliminated reality including the universe just produced

4. requires a new concept of reality.

String Theory is one of the results of this search for a new concept of reality.

Scientists are hopeful that string theory will unlock one of the biggest mysteries of the universe

String theory is a work in progress, so trying to pin down exactly what the science is, or what its fundamental elements are, can be kind of tricky. The key string theory features include:

  • All objects in our universe are composed of vibrating filaments (strings) and membranes (branes) of energy…

  • Several extra (usually unobservable) dimensions to the universe must exist…[Dark Matter?]

  • There are also possible…parallel universes…

  • scientists can use the fact that humanity exists as an explanation for certain physical properties of our universe.

Put simply, String Theory postulates six higher dimensions in addition to the four common dimensions (3D + time). What appears to be solid matter is actually made up of:

  • dzorb1 Planck length of vibrating energy loosely envisioned as a “string”.
  • The movement of the vibrating length traces width, and thus becomes 2D, like a drawing.
  • Further vibration within other dimensions such as height and length makes the energy field assume the form of a quantum particle.
  • Humans are four dimensional, therefore cannot accurately perceive the higher dimensions. As a this three dimensional being observing a four dimensional pyramid passing by, you will not be able to perceive anything but a flat triangle gradually enlarging. You will not understand what it happening unless a higher dimensional being provides a two dimensional drawing representing three dimensions. The same conditions hold true for 4 dimensional beings perceiving any aspects of a 10 dimensional reality. Do you get where I’m going with this? UFOs.
