31) The King Is Dead! Long Live The King!

“And God said, Let us make Adam /אָדָם / prototype human in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion / reign over…all the earth…And God blessed them, and God said unto them,

  1. Be [as in “let there be light”, this is a command performance, not a suggestion] fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth,
  2. and subdue it: and have dominion.” (Genesis 1:26-28)

Can we not recognize that this declaration is a commitment, a covenant? 

And can we not recognize that turning dominion of the earth over to the Adams incurred the risk of imploding all earthly creation at the destruction of the Adams?

And would that extinguish God himself? We can deduce that, if God could not execute his will, he could not sustain his Creation, then, yes. That should indeed catalyze an implosion of all existing structured being back to pure energy.

But when Adam responded to his partner’s need with faith in God, acting according to God’s Word to stick with his wife regardless of the consequences, God’s will was executed.

The penultimate manual on the Christian Church, the letter to the Ephesians, actually begins with Adam in the Garden of Eden.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ / YHVH’s Chosen Ruler / Adam, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ / the Chosen One / Adam: According as he hath chosen us / humans, not angels in him before the foundation of the world, that we / not angels should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us / not angels unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ / YHVH’s Chosen Savior / Adam to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace,

Can we not recognize that the angels, both righteous and fallen, especially Lucifer, even all creation, were poised, breathless, in agony of anticipation of the outcome of the Adam’s death sentence? Can we not hear the roar of triumph by the winning side of righteous angels at God’s replacement of judgment with grace, mingled with the screams of anger by the defeated fallen angels and the groan of creatures on whom the death sentence was commuted as YHVH killed, then skinned his own innocent animals to make coverings for his terrified children standing naked and ashamed before all creation? Maybe naked dreams are atavistic memories of this first day of judgment.

wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:” (Ephesians 1:3-9)

Can we not see how Adam’s unity in death with the Woman kept her, as well as him, in God’s will for mankind? 

God’s word / oath was not broken. His transfer of dominion – possessions and authority – to humanity was not revoked.

“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.” (Numbers 23:19-20)

Even after becoming mortal, Adam remained the Son of God. As covered more thoroughly in the post In Earth As In Heaven: ” a child became a son or daughter…through acknowledgement or election by the father.

Likewise, the father controls the distribution of inheritance of his children, granting the controlling share of physical and power resources, not according to birth order or maternal status, but to the son who has proven his commitment to the family enterprise, and ability to carry out the father’s legacy as the CEO that he is. And so Adam also remained YHVH’s Chosen heir, the individual who is the image and likeness of God.

When we apply these facts to the “the son of Adam, which was the son of God,” we realize that the following statements refer to official legal proclamations, not enforcement of paternal child support by DNA testing.

  • he that said unto him, Thou art my Son – because I bestow this relationship on you,
  • to day have I begotten thee – made thee my heir…(Hebrews 5:8)

Then we must also retroactively apply the rest of the passage to Adam.

saith also…Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec…

    • first being by interpretation King of righteousness,
    • and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;“ (Hebrews 5:8-11, 7:1-2)

This is validated by the Sumerians, whose origins predate the Flood. The highest tier of Sumerian gods consists of

  • the god of heaven – Anu / Ani , YHVH
  • the god of the underworld – Enki / Lucifer
  • and the god of the earth – Enlil / Adam.

Without question Enlil, with An [Ani , YHVH] and Enki [Lucifer], form the supreme Mesopotamian triad of deities…Enlil’s prominence and power can be seen in his titles and epithets: “The Great Mountain” [Zion, Jerusalem]…”King of all the lands”…”Father of the black headed people”…[consistent with Semitic ancestry tracing back from Abraham through Shem and Noah to Adam.] Moreover, Enlil’s position as a supreme deity was abstracted to the concept of ellilūtu, “Enlilship”, a term applied to others, both human and heavenly, who held paramount authority

in the Akkadian Anzu myth Enlil holds the tablet of destinies, the possessor of which commands the world...It is Enlil who grants kingship to the rulers of Mespotamia…Enlil’s command is said to be unalterable, once he had made a decision, there was no way of changing it…Enlil was a provider, and as such he was declared the “Lord of abundance”…However, Enlil could also take such plenty away and devastate the land, e.g., in The Lament for Urim, he is said to have “brought the storm of abundance away”, to have “annihilated the land, silenced the city“…

Some Sumerian myths narrate how other gods visited Enlil to give him the “first-fruit offerings”…This should be interpreted as a gesture of deference and acknowledgement of Enlil’s highest authority.

How do reconcile the upholding of God’s promise that Adam would continue to be Melchizedeck Priest-King of Righteousness and Peace forever with the record of his death?

Adam lived on in his generations / his genetics transferred first to the Woman, and between the two clones all of Adam’s genes were passed down to his all his offspring. 

God’s grant of dominion to his son Adam made in his image and likeness is maintained by Adam’s son Seth made in his image and likeness. Adam’s dominion over the earth continues through his dynasty, which can be tracked back to God himself, the founder of the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth. 

This is another expression of humans – unlike angels – being made in the likeness of God. We exist both individually and collectively through our children. Once made, we maintain our own existence infinitely while also splitting off part of ourselves – through our DNA – to make other beings in our image and likeness who are both us and distinct from us.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him…and called their name Adam…And Adam…begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth…And Seth…began Enos…” (Genesis 5)

This continuity is expressed in the proclamation “The king is dead. Long live the king!” 


And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:” (Hebrews 7:23)

Oh hold on! you retort. That verse is referring to the Levitical priesthood.

In that specific argument, yes, but that induction is drawn from knowledge that holds true for any human royal priesthood.

All references to Melchizedek must apply first to Adam in order [get it?] for subsequent proclamations to apply to later humans as his heirs.

The LORD / YHVH said unto my Lord / Adoni,

  • Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion:
  • rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent,
  • Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek / King of Righteousness.” (Psalm 110:1-4)

And so God’s grant to the Adams became the Adams’ unchangeable, i.e. last, will and testament to their heirs.

a testament is of force after men are dead…it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.” (Hebrews 9:18)

What was God thinking when he allowed dominion to be transferred to humans he knew were not capable of exercising it against an adversary as powerful as Satan?

He was thinking that there would be some human offspring who would seek “first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33) and in so doing would realize we need to acknowledge his power and authority, admit we need him, trust his word, believe his promises to us, and act accordingly

“walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power…Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light…in the faith grounded and settled…which was preached to every creature which is under heaven…the word of God.” (Colossian 1)

We don’t question that the line of descent listed in Genesis 4 doesn’t include all of Adam’s and Eve’s children. Those that are written down are his heirs, the beneficiaries to whom God conferred the blessing of the inheritance –  dominion over the earth, AKA Creator God’s King of Righteousness.

God’s grant of dominion takes the form of a testamentary trust, allocating physical assets and authority only to certain children who meet the criteria of the trust.

A testamentary trust is a type of trust that is created in a last will and testament…

Like all trusts, a testamentary trust allows the creator to stipulate how the assets contained in the trust will be disbursed. People often use testamentary trusts if they want to be able to specify when they leave their assets to a beneficiary. For instance, a parent might not want to leave their assets to their child until he or she turns 18 or graduates from college. The trust terminates when the beneficiary receives the specified assets…

A testamentary trust involved three parties. The grantor or settlor is the person who creates the trust in order to transfer his or her assets. The beneficiary is the person or entity who is the recipient of the assets. The trustee handles the trust and manages the assets until the beneficiary takes over…

We can understand that

  1. the grantor is the clone Adams, out of whom emerged Eve carrying the mitochondria / seed of Adam
  2. the beneficiary is a series of short-lived Sons of God who qualify to take possession during each lifetime,
  3. and the trustee is Creator God who manages the assets until the fully qualified Son of God inherits forever.

This brings us to the awareness that any covenants made to humans after the first commitment to the Adams must take into account the bedrock commitment to give dominion to the human Sons of God and their offspring.

an oath is a solemn declaration, usually based on an appeal to God or to some revered person or object (Matthew 5:34-36), that someone will do some particular thing–like speak the truth, perform a particular act, keep a promise, etc. To swear is to make the oath. To forswear is to swear falsely.

This first testament granting dominion to godly humans, AKA sons of God, follows the standard requirements when probated for authenticity.

    • Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” (Malachi 3:16-18)
    • ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven.” (Hebrews 12:22-23)
  • signed, in blood no less – Back in the day before the alphabet or universal literacy, symbols / signs were used to identify a person, especially authority figures. Think sign-et ring or military in-sign-ia.


With this in mind, we should understand when God tells us that his sign-ature is found in the heavens.

    • And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven…and let them be for signs,” (Genesis 1:14)
    • For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” (Romans 1:17-20)
    • “there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars…Men’s hearts failing them for fear…looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.” (Luke 21:25-27)

Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee…Behold, we are servants this day…we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it…to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes; (Ezra 8-10)

And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.” (Acts 5:30-32)

 In the manner of kings’ lists across times and cultures, Genesis 5 records the preflood lineage of Melchizedek Priest-Kings anointed to protect God’s people.

“And Priest-King Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth…and he died. And his heir Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat made his heir EnosAnd Lamech…begat a son / made his heir: And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed. And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters…and he died. And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Genesis 5)

Since the long lifespans of these individuals overlapped, not every appointed heir may have actually inherited the kingship. Details of some of the men who did assume responsibilities when the current king either died or became too old and infirm are given in the apocryphal book of Jasher.

And Cainan [Adam’s great-grandson] grew up and he was forty years old, and he became wise and had knowledge and skill in all wisdom, and he reigned over all the sons of men, and he led the sons of men to wisdom and knowledge; for Cainan was a very wise man and had understanding in all wisdom, and with his wisdom he ruled over spirits and demons; And Cainan knew by his wisdom that God would destroy the sons of men for having sinned upon earth, and that the Lord would in the latter days bring upon them the waters of the flood. And in those days Cainan wrote upon tablets of stone, what was to take place in time to come, and he put them in his treasures. And Cainan reigned over the whole earth, and he turned some of the sons of men to the service of God.” (Jasher 2:11-14)

And Enoch [Cainan’s great-grandson] lived sixty-five years and he begat Methuselah; and Enoch walked with God after having begot Methuselah, and he served the Lord, and despised the evil ways of men. And the soul of Enoch was wrapped up in the instruction of the Lord, in knowledge and in understanding; and he wisely retired from the sons of men, and secreted himself from them for many days. And it was at the expiration of many years, whilst he was serving the Lord, and praying before him in his house, that an angel of the Lord called to him from Heaven, and he said, Here am I. And he said, Rise, go forth from thy house and from the place where thou dost hide thyself, and appear to the sons of men, in order that thou mayest teach them the way in which they should go and the work which they must accomplish to enter in the ways of God. And Enoch rose up according to the word of the Lord, and went forth from his house, from his place and from the chamber in which he was concealed; and he went to the sons of men and taught them the ways of the Lord, and at that time assembled the sons of men and acquainted them with the instruction of the LordAnd all the kings of the sons of men, both first and last, together with their princes and judges, came to Enoch when they heard of his wisdom, and they bowed down to him, and they also required of Enoch to reign over them, to which he consented. And Enoch taught them wisdom, knowledge, and the ways of the Lord; and he made peace amongst them, and peace was throughout the earth during the life of Enoch. And Enoch reigned over the sons of men two hundred and forty-three years, and he did justice and righteousness with all his people, and he led them in the ways of the Lord...And it was in the fifty-sixth year of the life of Lamech when Adam died; [do the math – every generation was present and accounted for except Noah] nine hundred and thirty years old was he at his death, and his two sons, with Enoch and Methuselah his son, buried him with great pomp, as at the burial of kings, in the cave which God had told him. And in that place all the sons of men made a great mourning and weeping on account of Adam; it has therefore become a custom among the sons of men to this day. And Adam died because he ate of the tree of knowledge; he and his children after him, as the Lord God had spoken. And it was in the year of Adam’s death which was the two hundred and forty-third year of the reign of Enoch, in that time Enoch resolved to separate himself from the sons of men and to secret himself as at first in order to serve the Lord. And Enoch did so, but did not entirely secret himself from them…and the day on which he went and appeared to his subjects he taught them the ways of the Lord, and all they asked him about the Lord he told them…until all the kings, princes and sons of men sought for him, and desired again to see the face of Enoch, and to hear his word; but they could not, as all the sons of men were greatly afraid of Enoch, and they feared to approach him on account of the Godlike awe that was seated upon his countenance; therefore no man could look at him, fearing he might be punished and die…And the day came when Enoch went forth and they all assembled and came to him, and Enoch spoke to them the words of the Lord and he taught them wisdom and knowledge, and they bowed down before him and they said, May the king live! May the king live! (Jasher 3:1-22)

“And all the days that Enoch lived upon earth, were three hundred and sixty-five years. And when Enoch had ascended into heaven, all the kings of the earth rose and took Methuselah his son and anointed him, and they caused him to reign over them in the place of his father. And Methuselah acted uprightly in the sight of God, as his father Enoch had taught him, and he likewise during the whole of his life taught the sons of men wisdom, knowledge and the fear of God, and he did not turn from the good way either to the right or to the left. But in the latter days of Methuselah, the sons of men turned from the Lord, they corrupted the earth, they robbed and plundered each other, and they rebelled against God and they transgressed, and they corrupted their ways, and would not hearken to the voice of Methuselah, but rebelled against him.” (Jasher 4:1-4)

The Sumerian King List has interesting similarities to the Genesis 5 King List, but also significant differences. The most apparent is the lengths of time of each reign in the Sumerian list. However, this does not mean the Sumerian list is a complete myth. Someone more knowledgeable than me has analyzed the two numerical lists and concluded that it is possible to make the two lists match. Think of it like equivalents between the metric and the American measuring systems. In this case it is the difference between measuring in units of 60 – like minutes in a hour and circles – and measuring in units of 10 like our currency.

When the kingdom durations of the antediluvian section are expressed in an early sexagesimal numerical system, all durations except two are expressed as multiples of 602. A simple tally of the ciphers used yields six 10×602 signs, six 602 signs and six 60 signs.

The lives of the biblical patriarchs, however, have a precision of one year. If Adam and Noah are not included (as in the King List), and the lives of the patriarchs are similarly rounded to two digits, the sum of the lives has six 103 signs, six 102 signs and six 10 signs. In addition, if the number representing the sum of the ages was wrongly assumed as having been written in the sexagesimal system, the two totals become numerically equivalent.

It is suggested that the Sumerian scribe that composed the original antediluvian list had available a document (possibly a clay tablet) containing numerical information on the ages of eight of the patriarchs similar to that of the Genesis record and that he mistakenly interpreted it as being written in the sexagesimal system.

That the two documents are numerically related is strong evidence for the historicity of the book of Genesis. The fact that the Sumerian account shows up as a numerically rounded, incomplete version of the Genesis description, lacking the latter’s moral and spiritual depth, is a strong argument for the accuracy, superiority, and primacy of the biblical record. In addition, the parallels between the Sumerian and biblical antediluvian data open up the possibility of establishing chronological correlations between the rest of the Kings List and the book of Genesis.

I wouldn’t try to understand exactly what is being explained, simply take away the information that the Sumerian King List does have historical value for validating both the Genesis account and the extraordinarily long lives of the pre-flood kings.

As the above analysis states, there are “chronological correlations”, but I would not equate the two lists. The most telling clue is the constant change of the capitol of the king in contrast to Melchizedek who reigns from “Jerusalem, which I have chosen…I put my name for ever.” (II Chronicles 33:7)

The following is the translation by Jacobsen 4 of his critical edition of the Sumerian text of the antediluvian section of the King List together with a few selected lines of the postdiluvian section for comparison (see the [online] text following for explanation of the italics, bold and underlining):

When Mesopotamian polities went to war, the successful party…carried off royal family members, deportees, and precious goods and treasures…the gods of the losing king or polity…

Ancient Near Eastern gods were represented on earth by cult images…gods were seen as protectors of the city in which they lived, and their departure meant that the city was left vulnerable to invasion and conquest. By removing the cultic statues, conquering kings were symbolically stripping the city of its divine protection, thus placing the city instead under their new hegemony or facilitating its destruction. Assyrian royal inscriptions also describe individual enemy kings who face defeat as being abandoned by their gods…

Note that the Sumerian rival to the biblical version reports “when the kingship was lowered from heaven. The Sumerians acknowledged that the true power of a king came from heaven, both before and after the Flood.

“The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD‘s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.” (Psalm 115:16)

Note the plurality of “children”. Not just successive kings, but all humans who choose to be active players in God’s kingdom, given grace to defeat sin not only in our lives but, through priestly intercession, in the lives of others.
