10) Singularity: The Oneness of Being

About 13.8 billion years ago, the universe sprang into existence in an event known as the big bang.The early universe was…extraordinarily dense. In fact, scientists think that at one point the entire observable universe would have been about the size of a soccer ball.

As the universe expanded, it became vastly larger…

The European Space Agency’s Planck mission uses a different method, mapping the newborn universe…with microwaves…However, those predictions don’t exactly match Hubble’s and Gaia’s measurements of our nearby contemporary universe…

Almost everyone has heard the story of the Big Bang. But if you ask anyone, from a layperson to a cosmologist, to finish the following sentence, “In the beginning, there was…” you’ll get a slew of different answers. One of the most common ones is “a singularity,” which refers to an instant where all the matter and energy in the Universe was concentrated into a single point…

But this picture isn’t just wrong, it’s nearly 40 years out of date! We are absolutely certain there was no singularity associated with the hot Big Bang

The stars and galaxies we see today didn't always exist, and the farther back we go, the closer to... [+] an apparent singularity the Universe gets, but there is a limit to that extrapolation.

if this were correct…there would be a number of clear signatures of this we could observe today…

And yet, the temperature fluctuations are…thousands of times smaller than a singular Big Bang predicts…

There’s a limit to how far we can go and still validly describe our Universe.

In the early 1980s, it was theorized that, before our Universe was hot, dense, expanding, cooling, and full of matter and radiation, it was inflating. A phase of cosmic inflation would mean the Universe was:

  • filled with energy inherent to space itself 
  • which causes a rapid, exponential expansion, 
  • that stretches the Universe flat, 
  • gives it the same properties everywhere, 
  • with small-amplitude quantum fluctuations,
  • that get stretched to all scales (even super-horizon ones),
  • and then…converts that energy…into matter and radiation… 

If you want to ask the question of how long inflation lasted, we simply have no idea…whether it lasted a little longer, a lot longer, or for an infinite amount of time is not only unknown, but unknowable.

So what happened to start inflation off? There’s a tremendous amount of research and speculation about it, but nobody knows. There is no evidence we can point to; no observations we can make; no experiments we can perform. 

One thing that we can mathematically demonstrate, in fact, is that it’s impossible for an inflating state to arise from a singularity…

That is, based on a purely materialistic scientific conception of reality. 

Let’s make sure we understand what a Singularity is.

Physics Definition of “Singularity”

A singularity in physics is a point that has an infinite value. As an infinite quantity cannot occur in our understanding of Nature, singularities are not considered real by scientists. Instead, when theories predict a singularity, scientists take it to mean that the theory has been extended beyond its applicability. A new scientific theory is needed to describe the behavior of the physical universe in this area…

Singularity as Defined in Mathematics

In mathematics, a singularity is a point for which a mathematical expression is not defined. For example, consider the mathematical expression 1/x. If x=0, the expression yields infinity…But infinity is not a number that describes a quantity in our physical universe.

So the explanation of 1) how an infinite Singularity produced measurable mass, time and space 2) without ceasing to exist as infinity 3) which would have eliminated reality including the universe just produced 4) requires a new concept of reality.

As this article makes brilliantly clear, physical science cannot investigate what happened at the beginning of the physical universe during a state of infinity. The only way this can be known is through revelation.

Consider what physics has deduced that the infinite beginning must have been like.

    • filled with energy inherent to space itself.
      • This is the biblical God’s explanation of himself. “God is a Spirit / energy.” (John 2:24)
    • which causes a rapid, exponential expansion. “In far less time than it takes to blink an eye, the universe blew up by 100 trillion trillion times in size.”
      • We can reverse engineer the biblical description of the transformation back from the state of entropy / disorder / corruption to the original state of enthalpy / containment of all energy. “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye…this corruptible must put on incorruption…the whole creation itself.” (I Corinthians 15:52, Romans 8:22-23.) 
    • that stretches the Universe flat, gives it the same properties everywhere, with small-amplitude quantum fluctuations, that get stretched to all scales (even super-horizon ones),
      • Described as such in the Bible. “Ah LORD God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:” (Jeremiah 32:17)
    • and then…converts that energy…into matter and radiation…
      • Described as creation in the beginning of the Bible. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth…And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” (Genesis 1:1, 16)

“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name / attributes? what shall I say unto them? [The sun god, the god of thunder, the god of rain..?]

And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am / Infinite Singularity hath sent me unto you…the LORD / YHVH God of your fathers,..this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” (Exodus 3:13-15)

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the Jewish revelation of the name of God. As we Christians spell and pronounce it, the word is Yahweh. In Hebrew, it is the sacred Tetragrammaton YHVH (yah, he, vay, and he). I am told that those are the only consonants in the Hebrew alphabet that are not articulated with lips and tongue. Rather, they are breathed, with the tongue relaxed and lips apart. YHVH was considered a literally unspeakable word for Jews, and any attempt to know what they were talking about was “in vain.” All attempts to fully think God are in vain…When Moses asked for the divinity’s name, he received only the phrase that translates “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14)…formally the name of God was not, could not be spoken at all — only breathed. Many are convinced that its correct pronunciation is an attempt to replicate and imitate the very sound of inhalation and exhalation. Therefore, the one thing we do every moment of our lives is to speak the name of God. This makes the name of God our first and last word as we enter and leave the world.

Read Genesis 1:2 with the above considerations in mind.

a secret history of creation is encoded in the most familiar of these [ancient religious] texts, Genesis…

Genesis 1:26 [sic] is usually translated as ‘In the beginning God made heaven and earth’, but…The passage properly reads, ‘In the beginning the gods made heaven and earth’…

When we fact check that statement in the original Hebrew in which it was documented we find that, indeed, the word for God is plural.

The noun Elohim is plural but it is always used with a singular verb when it speaks of the true God. This indicates a unity and diversity within the nature of God.

Whether or not we believe the ancient Hebrew account, in order to conduct a scientifically reliable analysis of the Hebrew record we must acknowledge that this account clearly reports that the Creator is a Singularity with plurality.

Monotheistic Judaism is succinctly expressed by the Shema, “considered by some the most essential prayer in all of Judaism. An affirmation of God’s singularity” 

She-ma yisrael, adonai eloh-einu, adonai echad.

This is documented as a direct quote from Moses in the Hebrew Torah, referenced in the more familiar Christian English translation as Deuteronomy 6:4.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD / YHVH our God is one Lord / Ruler.”

This paradox is consistent with the physical sciences’ Theory of Everything merging all forces, although expressed in the physical world differently, into one fundamental singular force.


And that unity in diversity is expressed in the essential nature of the fundamental building block of all matter.

An atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element. Every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms…

Every atom is composed of a nucleus and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus. The nucleus is made of one or more protons and a number of neutrons… The protons have a positive electric charge, the electrons have a negative electric charge, and the neutrons have no electric charge…

  • The electrons of an atom are attracted to the protons in an atomic nucleus by the electromagnetic force 

And as described in the previous post, the electromagnetic force is Light.


Light in general and sun-light in particular enjoy some of the most prominent and most powerful symbolisms in many cultures.Sun is the heavenly light that man sees from the very beginning, indeed it is the stuff of life, what keeps life on earth…In Indo-European the sun and sun-light occupies prime position, the highest seat in the pantheon and religious imagery, an idea which is reflected in the name of the prime god Zeus (e.g. Gk. Ζευς, Skt. dydus, Lat. Iu(p)piter, etc., all from IE *dyeus ‘heavenly light, day light’). Many myths and many types of symbolism are associated with the sun and the heavenly light, many praises have been devoted to this primary natural phenomenon, and its magic and power have been immortalized in literature, art, and philosophy. It is, therefore, understandable to find close associations of light with life and life-source, and its lack with death, absence of life, and misfortune. Life, like truth, shines in the bright sun-light, while the opposite finds expression in darkness, in misty and foggy environments…

Light is a cosmic power, but also the power of life

Thus, we have the death of a man as deep darkness, or seen as a cloud or mist that casts a veil of darkness over his eyes…

In Homer…we find, among others, the following euphemistic and metaphorical expressions associating death with darkness or removal from light:

darkness covered his eyes (II. 4.461)
dark night covered his eyes (II. 5.659)
hated darkness seized him (II. 5.47)
to leave the light of the sun (II. 18.11)
the dark cloud of death encompassed them (Od. 4.180)

We can link this understanding of life as connection to the world external to the self as including not only interaction with material resources like air, water, food, but abstract consciousness of the environment. 

How does science explain this?

What is consciousness?

The basic definition of consciousness…”characterized by the experience of perceptions, thoughts, feelings, awareness of the external world, and…self-awareness,” according to the Oxford Dictionary of Psychology.

Scientists simply don’t…know where it comes from, or what it’s made of…

we can’t exhaustively say other organisms, and even inanimate objects, don’t have consciousness. Humans relate to animals and can imagine, say, dogs and cats have some amount of consciousness because we see their facial expressions and how they appear to make decisions. But just because we don’t “relate to” rocks, the ocean, or the night sky, that isn’t the same as proving those things don’t have consciousness.

This is where a philosophical stance called panpsychism comes into play

One of the leading minds in physics, 2020 Nobel laureate and black hole pioneer Roger Penrose, has written extensively about quantum mechanics as a suspected vehicle of consciousness.

Ancient religions have an explanation.

From the priests of the Egyptian temples to today’s secret societies…this model [of explaining how matter comes from mind] has always been conceived of as a series of thoughts emanating from the cosmic mind. Pure mind to begin with, these thought-emanations…, energy…became gas, then liquid and finally solids…

These emanations have also always been thought of as in some sense…intelligent…

The reality of everyday experience is that thoughts are quite routinely introduced…The ancients understood this ‘somewhere else’ as being some-one else, the someone being a god, an angel or a spirit…emanations from the great cosmic mind – Thought-Beings in other words. What I am asking you to consider now is that these great Thought-Beings expressed themselves through people. If today we naturally think of people thinking, in ancient times they thought of Thoughts peopling…

For example, Alexander the Great or Napoleon were vehicles for a great spirit…No one could oppose them and they succeeded in everything they did – until the spirit left them…

In this history gods and spirits control the material world and exercise power over it. We will see too, how sometimes disembodied beings break through, unbidden…commerce with the spirits was always considered highly dangerous

If you believe that matter came before mind, you have to explain how a chance coming together of chemicals creates consciousness, which is difficult. 

If, on the other hand, you believe that matter is precipitated by a cosmic mind, you have the equally difficult problem of explaining how, of providing a working model.

Not if we consider hyper dimensionality as reliably reported in ancient documents.

At its most general, pantheism may be understood positively as the view that God is identical with the cosmos, the view that there exists nothing which is outside of God, or else negatively as the rejection of any view that considers God as distinct from the universe…

(1) Many of the world’s religious traditions and spiritual writings are marked by pantheistic ideas and feelings. This is particularly so for example, in Hinduism of the Advaita Vedanta school, in some varieties of Kabbalistic Judaism, in Celtic spirituality, and in Sufi mysticism. (2) Another vital source of pantheistic ideas is to be found in literature, for example, in such writers as Goethe, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Emerson, Walt Whitman, D.H. Lawrence, and Robinson Jeffers. We find that ancient religious documents reveal that consciousness is a defining attribute of the Creator’s Energy / Spirit Being, which was, by the very process of Creation being extensions or “splitting off” of himself like wind energy seen through the activity of clouds, was transferred into all of his Creation.

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)


the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soulall flesh, wherein is the breath of life, (Genesis  2:7, 6:17)

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now…waiting for…the redemption…” (Romans 8:22-23)

Ancient religions report extensively on invisible hyper dimensionality that invisibly interacts with the material world, AKA the spirit dimension. With the latest quantum physics discoveries in mind, we should be able to recognize that these ancient teachings are not mere myths, imagery, metaphors, or euphemisms, but actual revealed knowledge of the hidden dimensions.

I offer to you that what the first century Jewish Messiah we call Jesus Christ taught about himself from ancient Hebrew accounts is not a contradiction of Monotheism, but a paradoxical truth.

As with any complex concept, it takes study to understand it. Some people don’t bother to study, but are they the ones whose opinion you should accept?


there’s a striking difference between the first three Gospels — Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which are known together as the Synoptic Gospels — and the Gospel of John...

…theological debates and heresies were becoming rampant — including Gnosticism and other ideologies that denied either Jesus’ divine nature or human standing. These controversies were the tip of the spear leading to the great debates and councils of the 3rd and 4th centuries (the Council of Nicaea, the Council of Constantinople, and so on) — many of which revolved around the mystery of Jesus’ nature as both fully God and fully man.

John took a lot of pains to make it crystal clear that Jesus was indeed God in human form.

John writes his Gospel like a good defense attorney and in his opening statement (1:1-2) discloses Jesus’ identity from the very beginning (Compare with Genesis 1:1)…

“In the beginning was the Word / Logos, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4)

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) 

John then focuses on specific miracles that would reveal Jesus’ divine nature and his life-giving mission…

Notice that all of these miracles are “apologetic” demonstrations of Jesus’ ability to control the science of the natural order. Only God the Creator could do this. For example, his power over chemistry (water to wine), power over biology (healing disease and disability), power over the laws of nature (walking on water), and finally his power over death both physical and spiritual (raising Lazarus and his own resurrection).

In every chapter John focuses on Jesus’ deity being revealed. The most convincing account is found in John 8:58: Jesus said to them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

John provides evidence that Jesus Himself claimed to be God by revealing a series of “I AM” statements that correspond to Old Testament language and prophecy: (Great article on this at gotquestion.org)

In addition, we can trace the chain of custody of John’s teachings through his disciples starting with Ignatius (ca. AD 35-117) and Polycarp (69–155) who taught Irenaeus (AD 120-202) who taught Hippolytus (AD 170-236). According to J. Warner Wallace, “John’s students recorded his teachings and identified the sources for later generations. Long before the Codex Sinaiticus was first penned or the Council of Laodicea formalized the canon, the New Testament was established as a reliable eyewitness.” The chain of custody can be further corroborated and established through the other Apostles (Peter, Paul and Mark) and their disciples.

These Christological debates weren’t conducted by Robert’s Rules of Order. They were vicious attacks by power-hungry wolves finding easy prey among docile followers.

The debates among religious Jews centered on whether or not he was “that Prophet, the hope of Israel” as prophesied in the Jewish scriptures, and revolted against the idea that a monotheistic God of the Shema could be worshipped as a human being.

The debates among Gentiles was likewise centered on whether or not he fit into their scriptures.

This is evident in John’s terms for life and death. We need to understand the 1st century lingo if we are going to understand John’s message.

We see in John…Greek pagan concepts and philosophies as a tool for communicating Jesus as the Logos to a Christianized Gentile audience…Heraclitus of Ephesus used the word Logos around 500 BCE to describe his concept of the regularity with which the universe seemed to operate. The universe was a divine machine and Heraclitus credited the Logos (literally the reason) as the ultimate rationale which secretly operated the universe and the heavens above. [Emphases added.]

The Logos was…responsible for keeping the ratio of all things in proportion, much like the balance of Eastern yin (dark) and yang (light). The cult of Hermes made use of this to describe their Hermetic corpus written about in the Poimandres:

“The [Poimandres] writer fell into a deep and heavy trance, in which there appeared to him a being who introduced himself as Poimandres (Shepherd of Men), “the Mind of Authority.” Poimandres then shows the mystic a vision, in which he sees a great light and a great darkness, respectively reality and matter. From the light comes “a Holy Logos,” …the “shining Son of God,” who proceeds from Mind itself…”

By the beginning of the Common Era, the Logos was a deeply felt and intricate part of Greek thought…It was well established that the Logos was a divinely felt presence of God, but no philosopher could find a more practical implementation for how the Logos actually mattered to humans and their lives. The man who would provide this meaning and give personified substance to the Logos at the beginning of the Common Era was Philo.

Philo of Alexandria (30 BCE – 45 CE)…was a Jew of the dispersion, and observed the mitzvot [religious rites like Passover], yet like a lot of cosmopolitan Alexandrians of the time, worshipped the Greek gods too. Philo believed that the two worlds were not irreconcilable and the Logos was his attempt at melding Yahwism with the Greek vision of God…[who] believed that God was inherently “unknowable.” He was beyond human understanding and all attempts to describe God would end in failure. However…If one could achieve the Hermetic level of mystical awareness as chronicled in the Poimandres, one will be able to experience God.

Yahweh, however, was much different in that he was easily accessible and constantly busied himself with the details of everyday Jewish life…Yahweh was the opposite of the philosophic construct of the Greek Unknowable; he was nearby and could be reached easily just by calling out to him.

Philo’s work bridged this gap, postulating an ousia of God, or a singular essence, which is the unknowable, and an energeiai (energy) / Spirit which was the very thoughts of God. God’s energy could interact and touch the lives of mortals despite the remote ousia which was inaccessible to man…The Logos was a mediator for God; making it possible to realize the energy of God, and thus, by extension, the impossible ousia of God Himself…

Philo’s Word was extremely popular among Jews and non-Jews alike, successfully splitting God into multiple personifications that pagan worshippers would later refine further from Bi- to Trinitarian concepts that we are familiar with today. We first see the application of the philosophy of the Logos in the prologue of the Gospel of John which begins by proclaiming Philo’s triumph:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God …. The same was in the beginning with God … and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father [God]…” (John 1:1-14)

John has promulgated the Logos in a radically new way…

Jesus’ appeal to readers of Philo’s synthesis of Greek philosophy with Jewish religion can be discerned in John’s account, such as the following.

much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord / YHVH. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves…behold, the world is gone after him. And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: The same came therefore to Philip…and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus…Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light...He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me [YHVH]. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. (John 12:12-35)

Bear in mind that being named “Philip” indicates that this Jewish man was Hellenized, most likely by his parents. In land recently ravaged by the Greek warlord Antiochus Epiphanes, naming a boy after the Greek warlord father of of the ultimate Greek warlord Alexander the Great is the equivalent in our culture of naming a boy Adolf Hitler.

Also interesting that “Philip” is simply the English version of the Greek “Philo.”

Interesting that Philip is mentioned by name 11 times in the book of John, and was among the first to minister to non-Jews – Greek widows, the Samaritans, the Ethiopian eunuch, and outreach in the Gentile city of Caesarea. 

The Essenes wrote extensively about the Children of Light who were constantly engaged in a battle against their nemesis, the Wicked Priest who was of darkness. The contrasts of those who walk in the light and those lost in the dark are played heavily in John….The woman at the well in Samaria is told that “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (4:13-14)…John’s intended readers who are already well-versed in Philo’s allegory are well aware of the spiritual water that Jesus is referring to…

Early Christians most likely practiced then-common spiritual journeys that were widespread and written extensively about in Persian, Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman, Jewish and Christian literature…religious contemporaries from whom the Christians drew their converts, desired to verify their religion by making a spiritual journey and seeking the divinity on the higher planes of existence where he dwelled…unless one undertake this journey, they cannot achieve everlasting life…being “born again” is necessary [except a man be born again…of…the spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God” (John 3:3-5)].

Some modern Christian believers are familiar with this concept of being born again through a spirit and regard it as unique to Christianity…the pagan Mithras Liturgy, a guidebook of sorts that assists in the Eucharist and prepares the sojourner for his heavenly journey…advises the seeker of the Sun-god (father of Mithras) to pray saying:

“[F]irst beginning of my beginning, …spirit of spirit, the first spirit in me, …now if it be your will, ...give me over to immortal birth and, following that, to my underlying nature, so that, after the present need which is pressing me exceedingly, I may gaze upon the immortal beginning with the immortal spirit, …that I may be born again in thought.

Many Greek and Roman texts survive which describe similar transformations that are necessary before one may ascend to heaven. In John, we find this merging between this unique Mithraic Eucharist ritual and the Jewish Messiah of Jesus. John’s Jesus acts as the Mithraic communicator in the heavens (where Jesus was born and lives) and has Jesus promise to send the Holy Spirit as the vehicle for such a heavenly bonding (16:7)…

the [Gentile] Christians are now the Essenic ideals of the Children of Light with a special gnosis of revelation in understanding the Logos in its true formBy the time John was first written at the end of the first century, the tales of Jesus grew to such an extent that Jesus was now fully transformed into a Hellenized god.

OK, obviously the above analysis is written by someone who doesn’t believe in the reality of any of the gods.

John’s failure to include evidence of Jesus’ humanity in no way supports the claim that he deliberately removed them from “his” version of Jesus’ life. They were well-known from the existing gospels written by his colleagues.

the Synoptic Gospels were written about 20-30 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection…[as] eyewitness accounts and sources would soon be scarce…

John wrote his account of Jesus’ life a full generation after the Synoptic authors had recorded their works…detailed accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry had already existed for decades, had been copied for decades, and had been studied and debated for decades…

And John refers his readers to these Jewish witnesses to back up what he is reporting.

And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in THIS book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ [Greek translation for Jewish Messiah], the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” (John 20:31)

Most of all, John rests his case and directs his readers back to existing ancient Jewish scriptures predating Judaism and going back to Creation, predicting his life and death.

“When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.” (John 2:22)

The above author does, however, showcase that the concepts of light, life, spirit God materializing in human form and humans being born again into the spirit dimension were integral to other ancient religions, not just Judaism. This demonstrates that the knowledge of Creator God of light’s Singularity was clarified by Yeshua haMessiah, not introduced.

The scriptures on which both John and Mithraism base their theology date back into the mists of time. Therefore, the best explanation for the parallels between them is that they both drew from the same primary source.

Mithraism dates back over 4,000 years and is likely much older. It is one of the most ancient religions predating most all of the other living religions on Earth…

When Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire in about 330 BC…the worship of Mithra…never became popular in the Greek world…the Greeks never forgot that Mithra had been the god / supporter of their enemies the Persians…

Mithra appears suddenly in Roman archaeology in the last quarter of the 1st century AD…at the time of [the concurrent spread of acceptance] of Jesus. Mithraism was essentially a soldier’s religion: Mithra, its hero, was a divinity of fidelity, manliness, and bravery; the stress it laid on good fellowship and brotherliness, its exclusion of women…this deity was honored as the patron of loyalty to the emperor.

In a Roman context, Mithras was…the savior of initiates of his cult…

By the Roman legionnaires, Mithra—or Mithras, as he began to be known in the Greco-Roman world—was called “the divine Sun, the Unconquered Sun.” He was said to be “Mighty in strength, mighty ruler, and greatest king of gods! O Sun, lord of heaven and earth, God of Gods!” Mithra was also deemed “the mediator” between heaven and earth,

The Emperor Constantine, also known as Constantine the Great, made the practice of Christianity legal in Rome, but continued to have his coins inscribed with the words, “Sol Invicto Comiti”, which means Committed to the Invincible Sun.

The birthday of the unconquered sun was celebrated at the Roman festival of Dies Natalis Solis Invicti on December 25, and it is often theorized that Constantine had a hand in selecting this day as the celebration date of the birth of Christ as well…

Seemingly, Constantine…viewed Sol Invictus as very similar to the Christian god. His adoption of Christianity in the Roman Empire was more likely a matter of political strategy than religious conviction.

After the acceptance of Christianity by the emperor Constantine in the early 4th century, Mithraism rapidly declined.

I put it to you that this militaristic religion did not in fact decline.

While the liturgies of all the religions of classic antiquity have almost totally disappeared – in marked contrast to the Bible it should be noted – the ancient Mithraic Liturgy survived into Christian times and provides an unimpeachable explanation for the process of merging the spirit of a god with a human.

The Mysteries of Mithra…were translated into Greek during the Alexandrian epochA scrupulous respect for the traditional practices of their sect characterized the Magi of Asia Minor, and continued…among their Latin successors. On the downfall of paganism, the latter still took pride in worshipping the gods according to the ancient Persian rites which Zoroaster was said to have instituted. These rites sharply distinguished their religion from all the others that were practised at the same time in Rome, and prevented its Persian origin from ever being forgotten.

In the Mazdean service, the celebrant consecrated the bread and the water which he mingled with the intoxicating juice of the Haoma prepared by him, and he consumed these foods during the performance of his sacrifice…for the Haoma, a plant unknown in the Occident / West, was substituted the juice of the vine. A loaf of bread and a goblet of water were placed before the mystic, over which the priest pronounced the sacred formula.

A curious bas-relief recently published shows us the spectacle of this sacred repast. Before two persons stretched upon a couch covered with pillows is placed a tripod bearing four tiny loaves of bread, each marked with a cross. Around them are grouped the initiates of the different orders, and one of them, the Persian, presents to the two a drinking-horn; whilst a second vessel is held in the hands of one of the Participants. These love feasts are evidently the ritual commemoration of the banquet which Mithra celebrated with the Sun before his ascension. From this mystical banquet, and especially from the imbibing of the sacred wine, supernatural effects were expected. The intoxicating liquor gave not only vigor of body and material prosperity, but wisdom of mind; it communicated to the neophyte the power to combat the malignant spirits, and what is more, conferred upon him as upon his god a glorious immortality.

As this study proceeds we will discover that Rome’s state religion is simply a cover, shall we say a shroud, for Rome’s militaristic, secretive, and preferentially, if no longer exclusively male, Mithraism.
