Key precept: Freedom isn’t free.
Stepping stone on the path to eternal life: Live out your restored relationship with your Redeemer or you will remain enslaved by the Adversary.
God’s forgiveness and humanity’s atonement allows us to re-establish a relationship with God. But what about that relationship established with Sin when our ancestors sold themselves and their offspring into slavery, and their property into his domain? Human freedom, ownership and dominion has to be bought back, or redeemed, from the one to whom it was sold.
“I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee. Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; That frustrateth the tokens of the liars.” (Isaiah 44:23-24)
Forgiveness and atonement must be followed by redemption and restoration in order to achieve a whole relationship.
As with all truisms in the Bible, we can understand the spiritualized concept through humanity’s social relationships with each other.
On April 10, 1945, the 84th Infantry Division liberated Hannover-Ahlem concentration camp. Confronted with walking skeletons and cadavers piled in bins, many service members cried and vomited. After inspecting the squalid camp hospital filled with men he described as “catatonics,” Capt. William J. Hagood Jr., a doctor in the 335th Infantry Regiment of the 84th Division, wrote in a letter to his wife, “You have to see it — and you are so stunned, you only say it was horrible. You can’t think of adjectives…
The liberation of the camps involved more than 30 American military units…These soldiers were responsible for organizing medical care, supplying food and eventually repatriating the freed prisoners, and so served as primordial architects of the survivors’ journeys from camp degradation to the postwar search for their lost humanity…
As the first presence from the outside world, the Allied liberators presented a dual reality for detainees in concentration camps…prisoners attained long-awaited freedom, but the way some liberators treated them reinforced the idea that they had become less than human…prisoners who weren’t selected for the gas chamber learned quickly from Nazi guards that they weren’t viewed as humans but as animals. Orders were barked, compassion was nonexistent. Semprún hadn’t expected that his liberators would view him in the same way…
the Soviets at Auschwitz…“did not greet us nor did they smile,” Levi wrote in “The Reawakening.” “They seemed oppressed not only by compassion but by a confused restraint, which sealed their lips and bound their eyes to the funereal scene.” Like Semprún, Levi compared this experience to the sense of shame felt in front of German captors: “It was that shame we knew so well … every time we had to watch, or submit to, some outrage: the shame that the Germans did not know, that the just man experiences at another man’s crime.”
Some liberators treated the surviving prisoners this way not only because they were disgusted by the reality of the heinous crimes committed upon them, but also because they were poorly prepared for what they would find. The historian Robert Abzug, who studied the way American G.I.s reacted to liberation, found that even the most “battle-weary” service members were stunned, unable to reconcile the Nazi terrors with their bloodiest memories of combat. Yet Allied intelligence had known that Jews were being rounded up, deported and massacred for years. In August 1944, major American newspapers covered the Soviet discovery of Maidanek, an extermination camp near the Polish city of Lublin. Similarly, in late January and February 1945, the Soviet liberation of Auschwitz made headlines, but these reports didn’t seem to prepare the soldiers for what they would find. When Captain Hagood was being taken to Hannover-Ahlem, he thought it was a prisoner-of-war facility, which he might have assumed would follow fair treatment laws outlined in the Geneva Conventions that Germany signed in 1929. He wrote: “All the grisly scenes I’d witnessed in four years of combat paled as I viewed the higgedly-piggedly stack of cadavers.”
Unlike Semprún and Levi, who met their liberators while still in Buchenwald and Auschwitz, Ruth Kluger encountered her first American in the town center of Straubing, Germany, after escaping Christianstadt. In her memoir, “Still Alive,” she recalled that when her mother told him they had fled a concentration camp, he put his hands over his ears, having apparently had his fill of those who claimed to be camp survivors. “Here was my first American, and he deliberately closed his ears,” she recalled. “One thing, I figured, was certain: this war hadn’t been fought for our sake.”
Some of these reactions…point to anti-Semitism, even within the most senior echelons of the military. After inspecting displaced persons camps in Germany in summer of 1945, Earl G. Harrison, a lawyer and American representative to the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees, expressed harsh criticism of the ways Jews were treated by the Americans, claiming evidence of conditions similar to the Nazi-run concentration camps from which they had been freed. He summarized his observations by stating, “We appear to be treating the Jews as the Nazis treated them except that we do not exterminate them.” When President Harry Truman read the report, he ordered Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower to inspect displaced persons camps. During a visit to a camp in Bavaria, Gen. George S. Patton told Eisenhower that he blamed the refugees for the squalor. He complained they were “pissing and crapping all over the place,” and wanted to open his own concentration camp “for some of these goddamn Jews.” Maj. Irving Heymont, who was stationed at the Landsberg displacement camp, said in his letters that some Americans proclaimed that they preferred German civilians, who seemed normal, to the Jewish survivors, whom they characterized as animals undeserving of special treatment.
Despite these racist views, meaningful connections happened in the days and months following liberation — on physical and social levels. Survivors reported that liberators who handled their bodies gently in the days following liberation — when the slightest medical error meant life or death for those in the most critical condition — brought an immediate sense of restored humanity. Levi compared baths from Soviet nurses to the one forced upon him by American military personnel. The nurses washed “with tender hands” and “soaped, rubbed, massaged, and dried” him “from head to foot.” This bath was not one “of humiliation, no grotesque-devilish-sacral bath, no black-mass bath like the first one which had marked our descent into the concentration camp universe nor was it a functional antiseptic, highly automatized bath, like that of our passage into American hands many months later.”
Survivors also said that social connections, especially talking with soldiers, helped to restore their sense of self in the days and months following liberation. Robert Antelme, a French survivor of Dachau, suggested in his memoir, “The Human Race,” that the need to communicate competed with the need for proper nourishment: “We wanted at last to speak, to be heard. We were told that by itself our physical appearance was eloquent enough.” However, he added that even when they could speak, “it was impossible to bridge the gap we discovered between the words at our disposal and that experience … what we had to tell would start to seem unimaginable.” Survivors were afraid that they wouldn’t be heard, and also that no one would believe them.
Before telling the story of their dehumanization in the camp, some survivors needed liberators to first see them as they had been before the war: as people with passions and professions…
Major Heymont took it upon himself to help Landsberg refugees not only improve sanitation in the camp, but also encouraged the publication of a camp newspaper in Yiddish, arrange suitable places for families to live together and locate china dinner plates for a communal mess hall. Irving Lisman, an ambulance driver for the 122nd Medical Battalion, had fabric and sewing supplies imported to the Bad Gastein camp so its inhabitants could make neckties, which were a sign of respect. Captain Hagood wrote to his wife requesting lipstick because, he reported, up to 10 women would share one tube, collectively reclaiming their femininity.
Redemption is fundamental to a right-eous society, providing for personal freedom, recovery from hardship, and social equity for all subjects of God’s kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven. This is the essence of the new covenant.
“Paul…unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer…and to the church in thy house…I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers…That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in YHVH’s Chosen Savior / Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee…for love’s sake I rather beseech thee…for my [spiritual] son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel: But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it…Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord:” (Philemon)
“All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.” (Colossian 4:1-9)
Oh, now, wait a minute! The Bible OKs slavery!! Well that is so wrong!
This was the reason one man gave me for his total rejection of the God of the Bible. His refusal to even discuss alternate points of view demonstrated that, in reality, he was just seizing on an opportune excuse for rejecting an authority figure.
The fact is that the Bible documents, and deals frankly and openly with, mankind’s selfish, AKA sinful, nature. The Bible condemns slavery and provides a solution by equalizing the status of every oppressed population in society – slaves to masters, wives to husbands, barbarians to Greeks and Gentiles to Jews – by virtue of equality as spiritual sons of God, as exemplified by Onesimus as reported in the quotes above.
“there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but The Promised Seed of the Woman / Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” (Colossian 3:11-15)
Oh, but the Christians who were fortunate to be born into status, wealth, opportunity, AKA Caucasian colonialists of the United States of America and Europe, don’t want to be equalized with impoverished peoples from colonized lands. We want to maintain our privileged lifestyle at their expense.
Call it what you will, extraction of more labor than is recompensed is the currency by which self-indulgence, wealth, status and power is always obtained, individually and socially. Our industrialized Christian societies continue to extort labor, we just simply don’t call these practices “slavery” while exploiting workers in factories and remote countrysides and foreign countries. Slavery – domestic and socially, by whatever name it is called – has been practiced by all cultures throughout all of human history. This is why redemption of slaves, as well as impoverished and helpless victims of powerful social forces, while historically not a fundamental aspect of Christianized nations, is a fundamental aspect of godliness.
Slavery is known to have existed as early as the Shang dynasty (18th–12th century BCE) in China. It…continued to be a feature of Chinese society down to the 20th century. For most of that period it appears that slaves were generated in the same ways they were elsewhere, including capture in war, slave raiding, and the sale of insolvent debtors. In addition, the Chinese practiced self-sale into slavery, the sale of women and children (to satisfy debts or because the seller could not feed them), and the sale of the relatives of executed criminals. Finally, kidnapping seems to have produced a regular flow of slaves at some times…
Among the Aztecs of Mexico, slavery generally seems to have been relatively mild. People got into the institution through self-sale and capture and could buy their way out relatively easily. Slaves were often used as porters in the absence of draft animals in Mesoamerica. The fate of other slaves was less pleasant: chattels purchased from the Mayans and others were sacrificed in massive numbers…
In England about 10 percent of the population entered in the Domesday Book in 1086 were slaves, with the proportion reaching as much as 20 percent in some places. Slaves were also prominent in Scandinavia during the Viking era, 800–1050 CE, when slaves for use at home and for sale in the international slave markets were a major object of raids…
Continental Europe—France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Russia—all knew slavery. Russia was essentially founded as a by-product of slave raiding by the Vikings passing from Scandinavia to Byzantium in the 9th century, and slavery remained a major institution there until the early 1720s, when the state converted the household slaves into house serfs in order to put them on the tax rolls. House serfs were freed from their lords by an edict of Tsar Alexander II in 1861. Many scholars argue that the Soviets reinstituted a form of state slavery in the Gulag camps that flourished until 1956.
Slavery was much in evidence in the Middle East from the beginning of recorded history. It was treated as a prominent institution in the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi…Slaves were present in ancient Egypt and are known to have been murdered to accompany their deceased owners into the afterlife…
Slaves were owned in all Islamic societies, both sedentary and nomadic, ranging from Arabia in the centre to North Africa in the west and to what is now Pakistan and Indonesia in the east. Some Islamic states, such as the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Sokoto caliphate, must be termed slave societies because slaves there were very important numerically as well as a focus of the polities’ energies.
Slaves have been owned in Black Africa throughout recorded history. In many areas there were large-scale slave societies…Approximately 18 million Africans were delivered into the Islamic trans-Saharan and Indian Ocean slave trades between 650 and 1905. In the second half of the 15th century Europeans began to trade along the west coast of Africa, and by 1867 between 7 million and 10 million Africans had been shipped as slaves to the New World. Although some areas of Africa were depleted by slave raiding, on balance the African population grew after the establishment of the transatlantic slave trade because of new food crops introduced from the New World, particularly manioc, corn (maize), and possibly peanuts (groundnuts). The relationship between African and New World slavery was highly complementary. African slave owners demanded primarily women and children for labour and lineage incorporation and tended to kill males because they were troublesome and likely to flee. The transatlantic trade, on the other hand, demanded primarily adult males for labour and thus saved from certain death many adult males who otherwise would have been slaughtered outright by their African captors…
The first known major slave society was that of Athens…Slaves were responsible for the prosperity of Athens and the leisure of the aristocrats, who had time to create the high culture now considered the beginning of Western civilization. The existence of large-scale slavery was also responsible, it seems logical to believe, for the Athenians’ thoughts on freedom that are considered a central part of the Western heritage. Athenian slave society was finally destroyed by Philip II of Macedonia [father of Alexander the Great] at the battle of Chaeronea (338 BCE)…
The next major slave society was Roman Italy between about the 2nd century BCE and the 4th century CE. Initially, Rome was a polity consisting primarily of small farmers. But the process of creating the empire took them away from their farms for extended periods, and the prolonged wars of conquest in Spain and the eastern Mediterranean during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE created a great flood of captives. Nothing was more logical than to put the captives to work farming, especially the olives and grapes that created much of the prosperity of the late republic and the principate. Slaves and freedmen were responsible for much of the empire’s commodity production, and in the early principate they ran its governmental bureaus as well…Roughly 30 percent of the population was enslaved…
Early in history the Bible established godly practices for those who identify themselves with the God who created humans in his image.
“if…thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family: After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him: Either his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself. Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the LORD your God….
And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land. If thy brother…hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold.” (Leviticus 25:17-25)
Even today, societies with strong clan membership ties, such as the Batak in Indonesia, practice the levirate – widows marrying brothers or cousins of their deceased spouse to keep the most valued of possessions – land – in the family. Interesting that Islamic law follows biblical regulations on slavery closely.
There is evidence that Creator God placed the hope of redemption in the conscience of all humanity when he promised to provide a kinsman-redeemer. This heroic human would restore freedom and ownership of the Earth after humanity had been sold their souls to the devil.
“And the LORD God said unto the serpent…her seed [heir]; it shall bruise thy head.” (Genesis 3:14-15)
Note, a “bruise” is a crushing injury, which for snakes is the best way to kill them.
This earliest reference to redeeming a life by taking another’s is utterly understood by humans, from modern government’s imposition of the death penalty to personal retribution.
The death of family members had a profound psychological effect upon the Iroquois, thus they required strong measures to relieve themselves of sadness. Essentially, they felt that they needed restitution in some form or another for the dead relative. Grieving matriarchs petitioned the tribe’s warriors to retrieve captives from an offending tribe. The Iroquois warriors then established a raid solely to gather captives; scholars call this practice “mourning-wars.” According to Anthony Wallace, the grieving Iroquois could find restitution in one of three ways. The first was for a warrior to bring back the scalp of an Indian from the killer’s tribe and to present it to the grieving person. Though the scalp represented a captive, live prisoners were preferred. The other two options involved a live captive: the Iroquois either vengefully tortured the prisoner to death or adopted him or her into the tribe. Since the Iroquois were a matriarchal society, the mourning woman would ultimately decide the fate of those captives that were brought to the village, mostly based upon the amount of grief that she felt for her dead relation.
Not only in agrarian societies but throughout history in all the world, land is the source of the Wealth of Nations, even, actually especially, in production-oriented modern societies.
In Economics, the word ‘land’…stands for all nature, living and lifeless. It includes all natural resources that we can get free from air, water and land…
It includes oceans, lakes and rivers, mineral deposits, rainfall, water-power, fisheries, forests and numerous other things which nature provides and man uses. The term ‘land’ thus embraces all that nature has created on the earth, above the earth, and below the earth’s surface. Dr. Marshall has therefore defined land thus: “By land is meant not merely land in the strict sense of the word, but whole of the materials and forces which nature gives freely for man’s aid in land, water, in air and light and heat.”
Importance of Land:
Land as a factor of production is of immense importance. As has already been pointed out, everything that we use can be traced ultimately to land. Land may be rightly called the original source of all material wealth. The economic prosperity of a country is closely linked with the richness of her natural resources.
Despite its renown as the first great work in political economy, The Wealth of Nations is in fact a continuation of the philosophical theme begun in The Theory of Moral Sentiments. The ultimate problem to which Smith addresses himself is how the inner struggle between the passions and the “impartial spectator”—explicated in Moral Sentiments in terms of the single individual—works its effects in the larger arena of history itself, both in the long-run evolution of society and in terms of the immediate characteristics of the stage of history typical of Smith’s own day.
How has this struggle between the passions / desires, and impartial spectator / witness to morality played out in Christian America?
The spiritual heritage of the United States of America is obvious. Numerous other of the most important American government leaders, institutions, monuments, buildings, and landmarks both openly acknowledge and incorporate religious words, symbols, and imagery into official venues. Such acknowledgments are even more frequent at the state and local level than at the Federal level, where thousands of such acknowledgments exist.
There are statues of Moses as YHVH’s great lawgiver in both the U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court buildings.
But mouthing words and putting on a show does not reality make.
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits [produce, production, works]…every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit…Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:15-21)
Since its inception in 1776, the United States of America has been considered the world’s most prominent advocate for freedom and liberty. Its emphasis on liberty and equality results from this nation’s dedication to and founding upon the Christian proposition that all men are created equal by God. This idea is clearly defined by influential Americans…in the Declaration of Independence…
Yet if this were true, then why, when it came to the Native Americans, did concern over their human rights and equality seem to disappear?…
In the mid 1840’s the term “Manifest Destiny” took many a man up to calling for an unmistakable drive for American expansionism…Manifest Destiny retains its roots deep in Puritan John Winthrop’s belief and challenge to the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 17th century…“For we must consider that we shall be as a city set upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us.” (Winthrop 1630) The charge to demonstrate Christian virtue and morality to all people can be closely linked to O’ Sullivan’s commentary on expansion as a way to achieve Winthrop’s goal. In his 1839 editorial in the Democratic Review, he states the following.
The far-reaching, the boundless future will be the era of American greatness. In its magnificent domain of space and time, the nation of many nations is destined to manifest to mankind the excellence of divine principles; to establish on earth the noblest temple ever dedicated to the worship of the Most High — the Sacred and the True. Its floor shall be a hemisphere — its roof the firmament of the star-studded heavens, and its congregation an Union of many Republics, comprising hundreds of happy millions, calling, owning no man master, but governed by God’s natural and moral law of equality, the law of brotherhood — of ‘peace and goodwill amongst men. (O’Sullivan 1845)…
What soon followed was the mass movement of hundreds of thousands of land-hungry white settlers across Native American lands. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed into effect the Homestead Act, which gave 160 acres west of the Mississippi, to any man who was willing to farm it…
the United States government now had thousands of Indians that had no place to live. They also had nothing to eat, due to the mass slaughter of the buffalo, their main food supply, which was now valuable for their hides due to the massive demand in Europe. In order to facilitate all the Indians and the “promises” made in their treaties with the government, they began the Reservation System…
the reservations were usually hundreds of miles from where the Indians were accustomed to living…the long journeys that the Indians had to take in order to reach the reservations, in which many elderly, women and children perished…
In most of the fighting that occurred during the period of the Indian Wars, more often than not, the Indians were simply protecting their lands. There were several raids and massacres by Indians against white settlers, that were generally revenge-driven…
in 1851…Colonel Chivington was sent to drive the Indians out… [of an] Indians camp, most of the men, women and the children came out of their tents to surrender and tell the men they did not want to fight. Black Kettle had run up the American, as well as a white flag signaling for a truce…Once the firing had stopped, the army regulars began to mutilate the bodies of the slain…
Robert Bent’s description of the soldiers’ atrocities was corroborated by Lieutenant James Connor: ‘In going over the battleground the next day I did not see a body of man, woman, or child but was scalped, and in many instances their bodies were mutilated in the most horrible manner-men, women children’ privates cut out, &c…numerous instances in which men had cut out the private parts of females and stretched them over the saddle-bows and wore them over their hats while riding in the ranks. (Brown 90)
This horrific massacre was driven by a belief that Indians were sub-human beings, not worthy of life. The belief in Manifest Destiny, that white men were destined to own the continent, and that the Indians were to stand aside and watch as their lands were taken away, and their people brutally killed, was the root cause of these atrocities…
John Winthrop’s original thesis of what he wanted the colony to become said that,
…every man might have need of others, and from hence they might be all knit more nearly together in the bonds of brotherly affection. From hence it appears plainly that no man is made more honorable than another or more wealthy etc., out of any particular and singular respect to himself, but for the glory of his Creator and the common good of the creature, man.(Winthrop 1630)
Winthrop had intended for the colony to adhere to God’s commandments, and to look upon one another with brotherly love. Winthrop also wanted every man in his colony to respect all other men as they were commanded in the Scriptures.
There are two rules whereby we are to walk one towards another: Justice and Mercy. These are always distinguished in their act and in their object, yet may they both concur in the same subject in each respect…There is likewise a double Law by which we are regulated in our conversation towards another. In both the former respects, the Law of Nature and the Law of Grace (that is, the moral law or the law of the gospel)…By the first of these laws, man…is commanded to love his neighbor as himself. Upon this ground stands all the precepts of the moral law, which concerns our dealings with men. To apply this to the works of mercy, this law requires two things. First, that every man afford his help to another in every want or distress. (Winthrop 1630)
This was a purposeful, and worthy goal to have. However, even the best laid plans of men can quickly fall victim to corruption and greed…
The missionaries that were teaching Christianity to the Native Americans were preaching the Gospel indeed, but they were not living it out as they preached. They taught the Indians to love their neighbors, but they were not living out that commandment as they were commanded…
In the 19th century the conditions of the reservations were deplorable. Disease, hunger and pneumonia were the chief killers amongst the reservation Indians. Hundreds died of diseases they had no names for, hunger due to the limited amounts of rations they were being given, and many froze to death, as no wood was given to the Indians, and the closest was, in most cases, miles away. Conditions have not changed in the 150 years. Still the Indians are without sufficient funds for food, heat or medicine. The government welfare checks that are provided to the Native Americans are, on average, barely enough to fill their propane-run heaters twice during the harsh winters on the reservations. The checks do not account for housing repairs either, as Native Americans are currently living in houses without roofs, doors or proper heating or air-conditioning. The houses that are provided are not maintained, and the Native Americans are not given money to do so themselves. With the casinos, most of the money they raise goes to education taxes for the state, which leaves very little profit for the Native Americans. States received $2.5 billion in taxes, regulatory payments and revenue sharing, resulting from state tribal gaming compacts. Jobs are not guaranteed in the least. The average national unemployment rate for reservation Indians, is around 80 percent. Most of the revenue generated by the Indians, per annum, is less 62 percent less than the American average as of 2011. Thus, without sufficient income, the reservation Indians cannot afford food to last them longer than a few days at a time.
Can we not see that the Americans’ conviction of superiority over other races and entitlement to others’ lands is absolutely equivalent to the Nazis? Simply on a smaller scale. At first…

The war involved all of the world’s great powers, and touched nearly every corner of the globe…
Hitler was able to ascend to power in Germany in part because he was successful in tapping the anger of the German people in response to the terms of their surrender in the First World War. The Treaty of Versailles compelled Germany to give up large amounts of territory, and pay war reparations, which significantly damaged the German economy.
Worse than simply being equivalent, the Native American genocide was the precursor to the Nazi Holocaust.
The Holocaust is the greatest crime in history, one that people remain desperate to understand. Germany’s plunge from the heights of civilization to the depths of barbarism is an everlasting shock…
Americans have an especially insatiable appetite for Nazi-themed books, films, television shows, documentaries, video games, and comic books. Stories of the Second World War console us with memories of the days…when the United States was the world’s good-hearted superpower, riding to the rescue of a Europe paralyzed by totalitarianism and appeasement. Yet an eerie continuity [of Nazism] became visible in the postwar years, as German scientists were imported to America…the resulting technologies of mass destruction exceeded Hitler’s darkest imaginings. The Nazis idolized many aspects of American society: the cult of sport, Hollywood production values, the mythology of the frontier. From boyhood on, Hitler devoured the Westerns of the popular German novelist Karl May. In 1928, Hitler remarked, approvingly, that white settlers in America had “gunned down the millions of redskins to a few hundred thousand.” When he spoke of Lebensraum, the German drive for “living space” in Eastern Europe, he often had America in mind.
Among recent books on Nazism, the one that may prove most disquieting for American readers is James Q. Whitman’s “Hitler’s American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law” (Princeton)…Whitman methodically explores how the Nazis took inspiration from American racism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He notes that, in “Mein Kampf,” Hitler praises America as the one state that has made progress toward a primarily racial conception of citizenship, by “excluding certain races from naturalization.” Whitman writes that the discussion of such influences is almost taboo, because the crimes of the Third Reich are commonly defined as “the nefandum, the unspeakable descent into what we often call ‘radical evil.’ ” But the kind of genocidal hatred that erupted in Germany had been seen before and has been seen since. Only by stripping away its national regalia and comprehending its essential human form do we have any hope of vanquishing it… [Emphasis added.]
In our current age of unapologetic racism and resurgent authoritarianism, the mechanics of Hitler’s rise are a particularly pressing matter.
When we review America’s racism we discover that not only is there the unapologetic White Supremacist side, there is an insidious side that poses as a savior but is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
We are now over 50 years into the development of the Great Society and the War on Poverty. It is time to take stock in these programs from an objective and evidence-based perspective. When one does that, it is not only clear that the programs have been a failure, but also that they have disproportionately impacted the black community in the United States. The current state of dysfunction in the black community (astronomically high crime rates, very low rates of home ownership and single motherhood as the norm) are not the natural state of the black community in the United States, but closely tied to the role that social welfare programs play.Or as Dr. Thomas Sowell stated:
“If we wanted to be serious about evidence, we might compare where blacks stood a hundred years after the end of slavery with where they stood after 30 years of the liberal welfare state. In other words, we could compare hard evidence on “the legacy of slavery” with hard evidence on the legacy of liberals…”
The biggest problem resulting from the Great Society is the breakdown of the black family. This is a sensitive subject, but one that must be broached to fully understand the devastating impact that the Great Society has had on the black community in the United States.
In 1965, when the Great Society began in earnest following the massive electoral landslide reelection of LBJ, the out-of-wedlock birthrate among the black community was 21 percent. By 2017, this figure had risen to a whopping 77 percent…with most of the unwed mothers being teenagers. We have documented extensively…the negative effects of the single-parent household on child development and outcomes. The black community is now entering its third generation of single parenthood as the norm, something that rose astronomically with the advent of the Great Society…
black women were more likely to be married than white women as late as 1950…In the 1950s, 52 percent of all black children lived with both parents until the age of 17. By the 1980s, that number had plummeted to 6 percent…
Among married black families, the poverty rate is 8 percent. Among black households headed by a single mother, that rate jumps to 37 percent.
There is no better predictor of male criminality than being raised in a fatherless home. 70 percent of all juvenile offenders in state reform institutions were raised in fatherless homes. This includes 60 percent of all rapists, 72 percent of all murderers, and 70 percent of long-term inmates…
Data provided by every census between 1890 and 1954 shows that black Americans were just as active – and sometimes more – in the labor market than their white counterparts. In 1900, for example, black unemployment was 15 percent lower than white unemployment. In 2017, it was 30 percent higher.
If the conventional narrative on black American poverty and general social dysfunction were correct – that this was caused by the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, and private discrimination – wouldn’t we expect to see a decline in black unemployment rather than the opposite?…
By 1920, there were tens of thousands of black businesses in the United States…
This concept was known as “double duty dollars.” The idea is that money spent at black businesses not only purchased goods for the consumer, but also played a role in advancing the black race in America. This, and not government handouts, was seen as the primary means of achieving, if not a perfect equality with whites, a social parity with them… [Emphasis added.]
national businesses tended to ignore the black market entirely. This, however, began to change in the 1950s…National businesses simply saw that there was an emerging black middle class with money to spend and didn’t want to get cut out of the market.
Today, black business ownership is in a state of “collapse” according to Marketplace.org…
Another area where the impact of Great Society policies is seen is in statistics on black homeownership. The black homeownership rate is basically the same today as it was 50 years ago. There was a spike in black homeownership during the Bush years. However, these were largely a function of subprime mortgages being given out to people who couldn’t really afford them.
It’s difficult to ignore that black Americans vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic Party, who champion the policies of the Great Society, which have largely destroyed the black family and black civil society. Why is this?
There are a number of factors in play here. First, the Democratic Party has little incentive to provide innovative solutions for such a loyal voter bloc…
The flip side of this is that there is not much incentive on the part of Republicans to court black voters…This is simple math: A large increase in the black vote doesn’t represent a whole lot of votes, but a minor increase in the white vote moves the needle significantly…Spiking the rural white vote to record levels while effectively ignoring all other voting blocs is what delivered Donald Trump the presidency.
The point here is that neither party is incentivized to offer solutions to black Americans…
Whatever the way forward is, one thing is clear: Social welfare programs ostensibly designed to help the black community have done little more than put the boot of government on the neck of black Americans.
Whether South or North, Democrat or Republican, America has not followed a godly path to a peaceful and productive society.
“When ye come into the land which I give you…thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubilee / jubilation / celebration to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month,
in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof…and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family…” (Leviticus 25:8-10)
Oh, but that was for the Jews in the Old Testament! Christians don’t follow the law! Really? Christians don’t have to the the right thing? Laws of human nature were established long before Judaism, teaching us about the inevitable consequences to actions taken.
“And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire.” (Genesis 4:6-7)
“What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” (Romans 6:15-18)
Contrary to what is commonly taught in many Christian denominations, the Bible does not teach that those who want to be reconciled to God can simply “accept his forgiveness as a free gift.” to be saved from hell.
What the Bible actually teaches is that anyone who truly desires to be united with God – not just Jews under the Mosaic law – must act like him.
“all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35)
“this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son YHVH’s Designated Savior / Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.” (I John 3:23)
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world….Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love…Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us…If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” (I John 4:4-21)
This is not an arbitrary commandment. The foundation of a godly, i.e. righteous, peaceful relationship is, logically, sacrificing our self-righteous attitude of entitlement. Holding grudges and making demands for payback can only result in fragmenting relationships and ultimately resulting in death / isolation and devastation, not just to people we hate but to ourselves.
“the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity…it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell…the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?…can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation [lifestyle] his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” (James 3:6-18)
The path to peace in personal – and national – relations is found in living, in reality, the ideal that all humans are equal. This is the essence of the commandment to love, i.e. identify with, unite with, one another. Marriage vows express this as maintaining a relationship for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, by:
- forgiving others’ financial, emotional, social, and immoral acts against us by accepting our losses,
- accepting the limitations on the transgressors’ ability to make atonement / reparations for the losses they have caused us to suffer, especially ephemeral conditions like time, relationships, appreciation, gratitude, and care,
- and elevating our former enemy to the status of friend by making them a social equal.
America’s treatment of White Europe after WWII contrasts sharply with our continued racist practices against Native Americans and African-Americans. America both redeemed their White brothers’ economies and restored their sociopolitical standing as equals. The benefits realized from this biblical practice of establishing a peaceful, productive society are so great that American has also extended this practice to Asian and African nations.
At the time, leaders in Washington understood that the United States had a powerful strategic interest in helping Western Europe to recover and stand on its own. As Secretary of State George C. Marshall said on June 5, 1947: “Our policy is directed not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation and chaos. Its purpose should be the revival of a working economy in the world so as to permit the emergence of political and social conditions in which free institutions can exist.”
That’s why the United States worked to rebuild post-war Europe, investing $22 billion — or roughly $182 billion in real 21st-century dollars adjusted for inflation — in economic foreign assistance across 16 war-torn nations from 1946 to 1952. To be sure, America’s post-war commitment to Western Europe demonstrated our nation’s character. Yet it also advanced our economic interests. America’s $182 billion in economic foreign assistance to Europe amounts to far less than the more than $250 billion in goods that the United States now annually exports to those countries…
Between 1946 and 1952, Washington invested $2.2 billion — or $18 billion in real 21st-century dollars adjusted for inflation — in Japan’s reconstruction effort. That amounts to more than one-third of the $65 billion in goods that the United States exported to Japan in 2013. Today, Japan is a mature democracy, the world’s third largest economy and one of America’s most important allies in the Asia-Pacific.
Decades after World War II, foreign assistance programs are still helping Washington to advance America’s core national security interests by promoting economic development and regional stability, while at the same time opening and expanding international markets for U.S. businesses…
Consider sub-Saharan Africa, where frequent energy shortfalls inhibit business activity and commercial growth, making it difficult for children to attend school, companies to create jobs and businesses to buy or produce goods. The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation in May 2014 aimed at expanding electricity access across sub-Saharan Africa…“to support affordable, reliable electricity in sub-Saharan Africa in order to improve economic growth, health and education in Africa, while helping job creation in the United States through greater exports.”
Clearly, America is motivated to invest for profit. Internally, redeeming our own citizens from poverty and restoring social equality would cost more than enough Americans are willing to pay in taxes, or to divert from defense or space expenditures, requiring morality for motivation.
The two approaches to financial aid are documented in the Bible.
“Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there; and, behold, the kinsman came by; unto whom he said…turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.
And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s: And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.” (Ruth 4:1-4)
Nice guy, the kinsman, helping out an impoverished widow. Although, as the account proceeds, we discover that he wasn’t being charitable. He was actually, like America, motived by financial considerations. Since Elimelech and his heirs were dead he was not planning on technically “redeeming” but “investing in” property that would more than repay him through the harvests it would yield him and his heirs for generations to come.
There was just one hitch. Under the Mosaic law, redemption served the purpose of restoring possession to the original owner and his heirs – forever, and ever, and... In the case where the land owner died without leaving any heirs to keep the land in the family in perpetuity, it was the duty of the redeemer to become a surrogate father. He would produce an heir who would take the name of, i.e. be posthumously adopted by, the deceased in order to continue the family of the deceased original owner.
“If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother [close relative] shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and…the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.” (Deuteronomy 25:5-6)
Restoration could cost the redeemer a lot. If he had to give up a son to the deceased’s estate, he risked losing an heir to his own estate. In ancient times, upwards of 50% of infants did not survive the first year of life, and Israel at that time was in deathly circumstances of famine and terrorist attacks which increased mortality in all ages from all causes of death. It was a dangerous time and place to raise a family.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and…they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth. And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies…and they were greatly distressed… (Judges 2:11-14)
“Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. And the name of the man was Eli-melech [means “my God is king”] , and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah…And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died…And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them.” (Ruth 1:1-5)
When Elimelech’s nearest kinsman, who either was ignorant of the law or planning to ignore it, was publicly informed by Boaz that he would be held to the conditions of this law, he rescinded his offer.
“Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou thy right to thyself.
Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. [You can see this footprint would be as effective an identification as a fingerprint.] Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s…Moreover Ruth the Moabitess…have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off…” (Ruth 4:5-10)
Boaz is the social exemplar of YHVH’s Savior who spiritually redeemed the earth and enslaved humanity from the Adversary.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Yahweh’s Consecrated Savior / Yeshua Messiah / Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as
- he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love…
- In whom we have redemption through his blood,
- the forgiveness of sins, according to…his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
- That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things…which are in heaven, and which are on earth…
- In whom also we have obtained an inheritance.” (Ephesians 1:3-11)
“by his own blood he…obtained eternal redemption for us…And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament [testimony, tangible proof, legal evidence and enforcement of someone’s commitment to accomplish something, like a last will and testament] that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament [death as a consequence of transgressing God’s moral and physical law], they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. ” (Hebrews 9:12-15)
Yeshua’s redemption also included purchasing a wife to partner with him in raising up the name of the dead Adam / first human son of God by producing more sons of God to claim their inheritance – the earth. More on this concept later, for now simply follow the biblical trail of evidence, not denominational, to recognize this entity.
As presented in the post The King Is Dead, Long Live the King, the first Adam redeemed his wife to the best of his ability by giving his life for her, loving her by staying united with her and identifying with her in her mortality. YHVH’s Promised Savior is called the last Adam to draw our attention to the fulfillment of this redemption. This wife is not Christian, or even Jewish, but as described in Ephesians, is a spiritual nation chosen before the foundation of the world, and growing since the first human was created.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men…as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name [of Yeshua, YHVH’s Savior, Creator Redeemer]:” (John 1:1-12)
As many as received the Word of God become the sons of God. This didn’t just start 4,000 years after Adam and Eve with Christianity. Surely the Adams received, and passed on, the belief in God’s word that he would overcome the Serpent and Sin through the Seed of the Woman? If they hadn’t, how did Abel, Seth, Noah have any knowledge of Creator God, receive his Word and act on it in faith? God has been working through partnership – a helper suitable for him – since he created humanity in his own image, after his likeness, and delegated to us the work of dominion over the earth.
I hear the storm of protest. The Bible clearly says that “Christ is the head of the church.” (Ephesians 5:23)
OK, what does the Bible define as the church / assembly?
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it / faith the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is [i.e. I AM / YHVH], and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him…
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses [since the beginning of time], let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Yeshua / YHVH’s Redeemer / Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord…ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect.” (Hebrews 11-12)
“the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints…I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. And he…shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God.” (Revelation 19:7-8; 21:9-11)
The Jerusalem on earth as it is in heaven preceded the establishment of the nation of Israel. More on this in the post The Order of Melchizedek.
“leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ / Promised Seed of the Woman, let us [New Testament believers] go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God…be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made promise to Abraham…Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee….God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us…even Yeshua / YHVH’s Savior / Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils…And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest…(The LORD sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec🙂 By so much was Yeshua / Jesus made a surety of a better testament…because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens…the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. ” (Hebrews 6-7)
Isra-el is not the wife, but a Prince of God, producing sons of the living God.
“The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel…And the LORD said to Hosea…I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away…Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.” (Hosea 1)
“God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.” (Romans 9:22-26)
The confirmation / testimony of the future redemption is the seal of the Holy Spirit.
“…in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory…Which he wrought in The Consecrated One / Messiah / Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, [there’s that footprint!] and gave him to be the head over all things to the assembly of believers / church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” (Ephesians 1:3-23)
Like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, this seal is visible evidence to everyone by the bearer’s God-fearing lifestyle. However, unlike the Good Housekeeping Seal, this results in rejection rather than shared approval by those who rightly acknowledge that they are under condemnation by the ultimate Good Judge of quality.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Yhvh’s Promised Savior / Christ Jesus, who walk [have a lifestyle] not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death…For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh [physically pleasurable cravings like sex, partying and gluttony]; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit…For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God…ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father…if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:1-18)
The seal of God’s ownership guarantees protection through the years of warfare that precede the final act of redemption.
“The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it…
Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself…And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances…And I charged Baruch before them, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days. For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.
Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying, Ah LORD God!…thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them: Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it. And thou hast said unto me O LORD God, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. [hear his questioning tone – this doesn’t make sense to Jeremiah.]
Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face…And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence…
[However – Redemption!] Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. And fields shall be bought in this land…for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah 32)
There are a number of other ways being “sealed” by the Messiah / Promised Redeemer are described.
- He abides, i.e. permanently resides, within us, as the Holy Ghost / Spirit of the risen Yeshua / Jesus.
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me…I go to prepare a place for you…I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also…And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” (John 14:1-20)
“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (I Corinthians 6:18-20)
“The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Yahweh’s Savior/Yeshua/Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:1-8)
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language…And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?…But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them…these are not drunken, as ye suppose…But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: (Acts 2:1-18)
3. He reconnects our spirit to the Spirit of God, to overcome the natural law (immutable link of effect to cause) of physics in neurochemical drives toward self- and relationship-destructive behaviors such as personality disorders, emotional disorders, and addictions to sex, food, drugs, pornography, gambling, etc.
“I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
- For I delight in the law of God after the inward [spirit] man:
- But I see another law in my members [physical body],
- warring against the law of my mind [soul], and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin [destructive behaviors] which is in my members [body].
O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?…Yahweh’s Savior / Yeshua Messiah / Jesus Christ our Lord. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh…And if The Consecrated One / Messiah / Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (Romans 7:10-8:6)
4. He frees us from legal bondage to powerful spirit beings like Satan and the son of perdition. Think of this like being controlled by organized crime.
“In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” ( II Timothy 2:25-26)
“And you hath he quickened [made alive], who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience…in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath…But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us…hath quickened us together with Christ…For by grace are ye are saved through faith…not of works…For we are his workmanship, created in Yahweh’s Consecrated Savior / Messiah Yeshua / Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:1-10)
The evidence – seal, testimony – of the Holy Spirit in a son of God is, of course, holiness in behavior and shared ideology, convictions, drives, and purpose for living.
“So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” (Romans 8:8-10)
“And hereby we do know that we know him [are one with him, identified with him], if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love [unity] of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth [is permanently, i.e. sealed] in him ought himself also so to walk [conduct himself], even as he walked.” (I John 2:3-6)
The purchased Bride of The Chosen One / Messiah / Christ participates in the process of producing sons of God. How?
“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called…Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;…But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men…And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying [building, the verb form of the noun edifice] of the body of Christ...maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.” (Ephesians 4:1-16)
The way humans become sons of God is simple. Reverse the process that transformed humans out of being sons of God. Believe and act on God’s Word instead of Satan’s lie.
“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit…For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God / YHVH’s Promised Savior. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” (John 3:1-21)
Just as a newborn’s circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems miraculously transform their functioning at the moment of physical birth to receive life-giving resources from the physical environment, so an individual’s spiritual system miraculously transforms its functioning at the moment of spiritual birth to receive spiritual life and access to spiritual power through connection to God’s Spirit.
Recall that Adam experienced two kinds of death: spiritual and physical. Accordingly there are actually two stages to restoration as sons of God:
- We tap into spiritual power over the destructive forces of sin in this life when we spiritually reconnect to God’s Spirit by believing his revelation and trusting his Consecrated Savior / Messiah Yeshua / Christ Jesus to save us from the destructive forces of sin.
“If any man be in The Appointed One / Messiah / Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (II Corinthians 5:17)
2. We gain control over the physical creation at the end of time, with the resurrection from the dead, when the enemy is destroyed and we inhabit new bodies which can function in the spiritual hyper-dimensions.
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Yahweh’s Consecrated Savior/Yeshua Messiah/Jesus Christ.” (I Corinthians 15:51-57)
To summarize what we’ve discovered so far: God created the universe and gave dominion to humans, one of whom promptly relinquished control to Satan by submitting to his control. God provided a way to regain control by promising that a human, the seed of the woman, would defeat sin – by resisting all temptation to sin – proven by his resurrection from the dead. Because this Promised Deliverer, Seed of the Woman shares the DNA, i.e. is one with all humanity, his actions can thereby remit sins for all humanity and extend redemption from sin and death to all humans. Any human who puts his faith in Creator God’s power to give life, and proves his desire to be united with holy God by allowing God’s Spirit to control his actions, is transformed into God’s likeness, not only his immortality but his holiness and righteousness as well – a non-negotiable condition for actually being in control.
