Key Precept: In the complete opposite of the Big Bang theory, unity is what is required to create and sustain life, both internal and external to an organism.
Stepping stone on the path to eternal life: Concede that connection, not disconnection, is required for life.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26)
Mystery religions seize on the plurality of the noun while ignoring the singularity of the action to claim that their ancient gods created the world and, pointedly, humans.
there was remarkable unanimity among the initiate priests of the ancient world. Their secret teachings are encoded in the sacred texts of the world’s great religions…a secret history of creation is encoded in the most familiar of these texts, Genesis…a few of its phrases can be opened up to reveal extraordinary new worlds of thought, mighty vistas of the imagination…
Today’s church preaches an extreme and radical monotheism…
Genesis 1:26 [sic] is usually translated as ‘In the beginning God made heaven and earth’, but…The passage properly reads, ‘In the beginning the gods made heaven and earth’…
To today’s most advanced thinkers, academics like Richard Dawkins, the Charles Simony Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford, and the other militant materialists who regulate and maintain the scientific world-view, the ‘mind of God’ is…the anthropomorphic fallacy. Even if we allow that God might conceivably exist, they say, why on earth should ‘He’ be like us? Why should ‘His’ mind be in any way like ours?
The fact is that they’re right. Of course there is no reason at all…unless it’s the other way round. In other words, the only reason why God’s mind might be like ours is if ours was made to be like His – that, is God made us in His image…
And what is that image?
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one Lord:” (Deuteronomy 6:4)
Aha!! Contradiction! That means the Bible is incontrovertibly inaccurate!
“And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err…The Lord our God is one Lord.” (Mark 12:24-29)
What the Bible describes is not an error, but a paradoxical truth. As with any complex concept, it takes study to understand it. Some people don’t bother to study, but are they the ones whose opinion you should accept?
The noun Elohim is plural but it is always used with a singular verb when it speaks of the true God. This indicates a unity and diversity within the nature of God.
No-one argues with unity and diversity with the nature of the fundamental building block of all matter.
An atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element. Every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms…
Every atom is composed of a nucleus and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus. The nucleus is made of one or more protons and a number of neutrons… The protons have a positive electric charge, the electrons have a negative electric charge, and the neutrons have no electric charge…
The electrons of an atom are attracted to the protons in an atomic nucleus by the electromagnetic force. The protons and neutrons in the nucleus are attracted to each other by the nuclear force. This force is usually stronger than the electromagnetic force that repels the positively charged protons from one another. Under certain circumstances, the repelling electromagnetic force becomes stronger than the nuclear force. In this case, the nucleus splits and leaves behind different elements. This is a form of nuclear decay.
Interestingly, while science describes activity from the smallest to cosmic size masses, even the most advanced scientists of our time can’t explain what those forces are.
- The weak force.
- The strong force.
These are called the four fundamental forces of nature, and they govern everything that happens in the universe…
What is gravity? Answer: We don’t really know [emphasis added]…we know how it operates in the universe…However, if we are to be honest, we do not know what gravity “is” in any fundamental way – we only know how it behaves.
the weak nuclear force is highly interesting. The weak force or weak nuclear force is the only fundamental force that is aware [what? isn’t awareness an aspect of consciousness?] of the spin of the [subatomic] particle and can categorise the particles into either particle or antiparticle…
We know that while studying the weak nuclear forces the parity of the particle plays a very important role. But the weak nuclear force violates the parity….
The weak interactions also violate CPT conservation.
In 1905 Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity established beyond a doubt that both [electricity and magnetism] are aspects of one common phenomenon. At a practical level, however, electric and magnetic forces behave quite differently and are described by different equations.
The strong force was first proposed to explain why atomic nuclei do not fly apart. It seemed that they would do so due to the repulsive electromagnetic force between the positively charged protons located in the nucleus….also responsible for binding together the quarks [the building blocks of…protons and neutrons].
A theory of everything (TOE) is a hypothetical framework explaining all known physical phenomena in the universe. Researchers have searched for such a model ever since the development of quantum mechanics and Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity in the early 20th century…both quantum mechanics and relativity fail when applied to each other’s subject matter.
During the mid-20th century, physicists developed the Standard Model, which has been called the “theory of almost everything.” It describes the interactions of all known subatomic particles and three of the four fundamental forces: electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces, but not gravity.
The outstanding question of the four fundamental forces is whether they’re actually manifestations of just a single great force of the universe. If so, each of them should be able to merge with the others, and there’s already evidence that they can.
String theory depicts strings of energy that vibrate…matter itself is seen as the manifestation of standing waves. Different vibrational modes give rise to different particles! We perceive the particles from the lowest vibrational modes.
Singularity…many scientists believe that…at the beginning of the Universe, this was what existed.
In scientific terms…a point in which all physical laws are indistinguishable from one another, where space and time are no longer interrelated realities, but merge indistinguishably and cease to have any independent meaning.
I’ve actually studied physics in college and read Stephen Hawking and I’m not ashamed to admit I don’t begin to understand any of this. But the bottom line is that
the most brilliant physicists believe there is a single unified force in all the universe.
Exactly what the Bible has been saying this for thousands of years. Read the following with the above scientific theories in mind. We can understand the Bible’s explanation of Spirit God as the singularity, the fundamental force perceived as sub-forces by humanity’s limited sensory capacities.
“the Spirit of God moved” (Genesis 1:2)
“there is but one God…by whom are all things.” (I Corinthians 8:6)
“The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.” (Job 33:4)
Ah, yes, Don’t forget the life force: “The vital principle or animating force within living beings.“
Living organisms are composed of lifeless molecules. When these molecules are isolated and examined individually, they conform to all the physical and chemical laws that describe the behavior of inanimate matter. Yet living organisms possess extraordinary attributes not shown by any random collection of molecules….
What distinguishes all living organisms from all inanimate objects? First, they are structurally complicated and highly organized. They possess intricate internal structures and contain many kinds of complex molecules. By contrast, the inanimate matter in our environment-clay, sand, rocks, seawater-usually consists of mixtures of relatively simple chemical compounds.
Second, living organisms extract, transform, and use energy from their environment usually in the form of either chemical nutrients or the radiant energy of sunlight. This energy enables living organisms to build and maintain their own intricate structures and to do mechanical, chemical, osmotic, and other types of work. By contrast, inanimate matter does not use energy in a systematic way to maintain structure or to do work. Inanimate matter tends to decay toward a more disordered state, to come to equilibrium with its surroundings.
The definition of life has long been a challenge for scientists and philosophers, with many varied definitions put forward. This is partially because life is a process, not a substance [emphasis added].
“And the LORD God
- formed man of the dust of the ground – material body
- and man became a living soul – non-material aggregate memories, emotions and cognition developed into a personality in response to environmental and social experiences
- after God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life / energizing spirit for both body and soul.” (Genesis 2:7)
Our understanding of the triune nature of man – body, soul, and spirit – allows us to reverse engineer to an understanding of the prototype triune model in which we were made.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26)
The independent functioning of the various states of being of body, soul and spirit, while still remaining one person, is easily recognized in humans.
- My body’s hunger controls my food consumption,
- as my soul’s will feels frustration in its unfilled desire to lose weight.
- while my God-given spirit’s morality feels guilty over the lack of self-control.
This is described in the Bible.
- I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak
- in the anguish of my spirit;
- I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. “(Job 7:11)
The disconnect between body, soul and spirit is one experience of death.
“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying…of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:15)
Death is minimally defined as “the cessation of the connection between our mind and our body” but we can readily expand beyond that to recognize that death is the inability to access the positive forces needed to override the forces of destruction. This can be caused by organisms that invade the cells of the body, natural wear and tear from the cellular to organ level in the aging process, etc.
The point to grasp is that death is defined as disconnection from essential resources. With this definition, we can understand the biblical statement that the death of the Adams “in the day that” they incorporated knowledge of evil, was that they experienced a disconnect between the body, soul and spirit during their lifetime as well as disconnection from their environment at what is commonly thought of as death. This is the natural condition which they passed down to all their descendants.
“by man came death…in Adam all die” (I Corinthians 15:21-22)
“For I know that in me
- (that is, in my flesh [body],) dwelleth no good thing:
- for to will [soul] is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. [Think about all the New Year’s resolutions you’ve ever made. Try to lose just 2 pounds…] For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do…
- For I delight in the law of God after the inward man [spirit which comes from God]:
But I see another law
- in my members [physical drives for sex, food, pleasure], warring against
- the law of my mind [soul’s rational desire to abstain from damaging actions],
and bringing me into captivity to the law [inevitable effect from cause] of sin [destruction, death] which is in my members.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 7:18)
We can logically conclude that the Adam’s original condition in the image and likeness of God was to be connected – in perfect agreement, in unity – in all three aspects of being.
And how does God manage to have unity in all aspects? Again, we can logically conclude this is the result of continuous right interaction with all forces – embracing what restores while resisting what destroys. This is the definition of life everlasting.
“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?…But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” (Romans 6:16-22)
“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle [temporary dwelling, mortal body] were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands [immortal body], eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven…”(II Corinthians 5:1-8)
The material body is the least important aspect of a human being, tearing itself down and reconstructing itself daily throughout life, and being absorbed back into the elements of the earth at death.
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes12:7)
Hmmm. Anyone else notice that the Bible documents the formation and disposition of the body to and from earth elements, and the giving and taking of the spirit from God, but not the soul? Where did the soul come from, and what happens to it at death?
Isn’t that the biggest question we have about life – what happens to us after death?
The following biblical passage on fetal development confirms the first reference to the soul’s origination with the body, expanding on the soul’s connection to the physical nervous system with its use of the elements of the earth.
“thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well…when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.” (Psalm 139:13-15)
Reins, literal fibers, like a horse’s reins, are the nerves originating in the brain penetrating throughout the entire body in order to control the members of the body,
Almost all nerve cells, or neurons, are generated during prenatal life, and in most cases they are not replaced by new neurons thereafter. Morphologically, the nervous system first appears about 18 days after conception…
In order to produce the estimated 1 trillion neurons present in the mature brain, an average of 2.5 million neurons must be generated per minute during the entire prenatal life. This includes the formation of neuronal circuits comprising 100 trillion synapses, as each potential neuron is ultimately connected with either a selected set of other neurons or specific targets such as sensory endings. Moreover, synaptic connections with other neurons are made at precise locations on the cell membranes of target neurons.
When humans and primates are first developing, their brains are built from what are known as neural progenitor cells. These are stalk-like cells that multiply over and over again, and they eventually form neurons. The equation is simple since more progenitor cells mean more neurons down the road, and it turns out that human progenitor cells behave differently than the progenitor cells of apes and chimps.
When observing the multiplying behavior of progenitor cells in the primates, the researchers found that the cells continued multiplying at a high rate for roughly five days before maturing and slowing down. That’s a lot longer than in mice, where the cells have been shown to mature within hours. This extended timeframe means that primates have increased brain power and larger brain organs, but human progenitor cells take it to the next level.
The research revealed that humans progenitor cells continue multiplying for up to a full week before transitioning. Because the multiplication of cells is an exponential affair, the extra two days of multiplication means a great deal more cells and eventually neurons in humans.
Sidebar here – how can we accept both this kind of complexity and rapidity of development from a single cell organism to a complete human being and Evolution’s fundamental process of genetic mutation over “billions of years”?
The conclusion that extensive changes have occurred over time is based
- partially on inferences
- and an interpretation of data
- evidence to support the idea that evolutionary development and common descent are both biologically and logically possible.”
In contrast to the word play on the inferences, interpretation, and possibility of evolutionary processes, we have the facts uncovered by the scientific study of anatomy and physiology.
The evidence of the amazingly controlled physiological generation of 2.5 million neurons per minute for nine months including 100 trillion synapses to create an informatics transportation system throughout the entire body with each neuron precisely connected to a selected set of other neurons on specific end points at precise locations on the cell membranes of target neurons should put any thinking person in a state of awe at the understated biblical statement “I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” (Psalm 139:14)
Further confounding evolution’s reliance on material genetics, the pre-existing social environment in which a fetus is formed has a great impact on the development of personality and behavior – i.e. the soul.
The totality of these events is not thought to be the exclusive product of the genetic code, for there are simply not enough genes to account for such complexity….External environmental factors include nutrition, sensory experience, social interaction, and even learning. All of these are essential for the proper differentiation of individual neurons and for fine-tuning the details of synaptic connections…
So we don’t have a nature vs nurture debate, we have physiology plus social interaction forms the person. Or to put it another way, the chicken and the egg came into being at the same time.
Researchers, psychologists and social scientists have agreed that genes, as well as one’s environment, engage in a complex interplay when shaping personality. Understanding the cause of an individual’s personality, behavior and cognition is an area of interest in various fields.
The soul – personality, thoughts, memories and emotions – comes into existence and can be modified through the chemo-electrical activity of the nervous system.
the nervous system requires continuous stimulation over an entire lifetime in order to sustain functional activity.
So when the senses of the body stop feeding stimulation to the nervous system, the nervous system stops functioning. Obviously, the soul stops interacting with its body in terms of behaviors, and with its environment in terms of socializing or learning.
But does it stop existing when the nerve fibers crumble back into the elements of the earth from which it is composed? In a completely material model, yes.
Yet we know that the nervous system is not just physical fibers. The fibers by themselves do nothing. They are simply the means of generating neurological electrical activity, which is not material but energy.
The electrical activity of the brain is what composes and allows expression of memories, emotions, intentions, directive of behavior and personality.
Interestingly, the Bible describes in picturesque terms appropriate to a non-scientific reader the same images now being provided by highly advanced scientific technology.
“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth…because man goeth to his long home [the grave], and the mourners go about the streets:
- Or ever the silver cord be loosed [chemo-electrical activity of the peripheral nervous system]
- or the golden bowl be broken [chemo-electrical activity of the brain]
- or the pitcher be broken at the fountain [clay body]
- or the wheel broken at the cistern [autonomic repetitive breathing delivering life].
Then shall the dust [of the clay casing for the electrical battery] return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1-7)
And where does the soul go? There is a lot of speculation, because this is beyond scientific study.
According to the Bible, without God’s intervention, it follows the body into the ground.
“God speaketh…He keepeth back his [man’s] soul from the pit….his soul draweth near unto the grave…he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit…He will deliver his soul from going into the pit…bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light [energy, spirit] of the living.” (Job 33:14-30)
According to this and other statements in the Bible, the soul remains intact despite the disintegration of the Bible, and can be recalled back to the living. This is validated by other spiritual sources.
many western religions, as well as south Asian and African ones, believe in some form of life after death. Its origins span from the ancient world and classical antiquity until today. Most often, the world of the afterlife is associated with Greek mythology, where it is called the underworld, or Hades.
According to the ancient Greeks, at the time of death, the soul separates from the body and is transported to the underworld, where it is accepted into the realm by the governing god Hades, who is known to reside at the edges of the ocean and under the deepest depths of the Earth.
Hades’ realm, as opposed to the kingdom of Mount Olympus, is virtually all gloom and darkness, solely inhabited by the dead. In Homer’s Odyssey, even the great warrior spirit Achilles in the nether world tells Odysseus that he would rather be subjugated as a landless slave than be the king of the underworld due to the dreary existence in the land of the dead.
Nonetheless, Greek mythology stresses respect for the dead due to the belief in the continued existence of the fallen after their spirit has passed on.
Is this just mythology passed around ancient campfires and current day tele-evangelist programs to alleviate anxiety about the unknown, or a believable statement of fact?
We know from experience that a human’s soul remains intact during a coma or other physically altered state of consciousness to resurface with the awakening of the body’s functional neurological system. So the Bible’s claim that human souls do not dissipate into the universal energy field when the body dissipates into dust, but remain intact in some guarded holding place, at least bears consideration and study in advance of death. This is a state of being that can’t be altered by the time it happens.
Can science prove the continued existence of the soul after the body dies?
And science admits a lack of consensus, ergo lack of knowledge, regarding the connection between brain activity and the end of personhood.
the President’s Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research in 1980...concluded that this approach [cessation of brain activity] to defining death sufficed in reaching a uniform definition nationwide. A multitude of reasons were presented to support this definition including: uniformity of standards in law for establishing death; consumption of a family’s fiscal resources for artificial life support; and legal establishment for equating brain death with death in order to proceed with organ donation.
Note, the determination was based on practical considerations, not on scientifically determined facts of life.
Aside from the issue of support of or dispute against brain death, there is another inherent problem in this categorical definition: the variability of its application in medical practice [emphasis added here and below]. In 1995, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), established a set of criteria that became the medical standard for diagnosing neurologic death…This set of criteria was then updated again most recently in 2010, but substantial discrepancies still remain across hospitals and medical specialties…
A great deal of controversy has surrounded the definition of death… [emphasis added]
So we’ll need to move beyond the applied science of medicine to the purely theoretical sciences.
Energy is the ability to do work…In the case of electrical energy, the force is electrical attraction or repulsion between charged particles. Electrical energy may be either potential energy or kinetic energy, but it’s usually encountered as potential energy, which is energy stored due to the relative positions of charged particles or electric fields. [Emphasis added.] The movement of charged particles through a wire or other medium is called current or electricity…
Biological systems also use electrical energy. For example, hydrogen ions, electrons, or metal ions may be more concentrated on one side of a membrane than the other, setting up an electrical potential that can be used to transmit nerve impulses, move muscles, and transport materials.
And energy, even in biological systems, cannot be destroyed.
So, scientifically, whatever part of the soul that is composed of neurological chemo-electrical activity continues to exist after the shutdown of operations of the material body. All the active chemo-electrical energy converts to potential, i.e. inactive energy, with the ability to be reactivated.
The hybrid car electrical system provides a parallel example.
Hybrids…create their own power for battery recharging through a process known as regenerative braking (regen mode)…capturing the vehicle’s momentum (kinetic energy) and turning it into [stored or potential energy]…the onboard battery…this charged battery…in turn powers the vehicle’s electric traction motor…
From this we can induce a corollary biological regenerative system in which the electrical energy of the brain is likewise conserved as potential energy when the body shuts down, on hand and available to resume function in the neurological system when restarted in the future.
So what is the state of the soul when conserved as potential energy?
We known that inability to interact with others or the environment does not define death, but medical unconsciousness in a spectrum from being asleep to being in a coma to being on life support. Note, that in every condition it continues to be. Through logic, we must conclude that, scientifically:
- if we accept that the personality, emotions, thoughts and memories comprising the soul are formed by electrochemical energy,
- and that energy is never destroyed,
- then the dematerialized soul at death continues to exist in an unconscious state.
Unconscious is not Un-aware.
The unconscious is the vast sum of operations of the mind that take place below the level of conscious awareness. The conscious mind contains all the thoughts, feelings, cognitions, and memories we acknowledge, while the unconscious consists of deeper mental processes not readily available to the conscious mind.
Much learning, especially recognition of complex patterns, takes place outside of conscious awareness. Similarly, many of the elements that go into judgments and decision-making are processed outside of awareness. Intuition, too, is a product of unconscious mental operations, a set of assumptions swiftly assembled from cumulative knowledge and experience. Much of human motivation and interpersonal attraction also take shape beyond conscious awareness…
People use a range of defense mechanisms (such as repression) to avoid knowing what their unconscious motives and feelings are.
Freud (1915) emphasized the importance of the unconscious mind, and a primary assumption of Freudian theory is that the unconscious mind governs behavior to a greater degree than people suspect. Indeed, the goal of psychoanalysis is to reveal the use of such defense mechanisms and thus make the unconscious conscious.
Although Freud often spoke of the soul, nearly all of his many references to the soul, and to matters pertaining to the soul, have been excised in the English translation... the word “die seele,” which means “the soul,” is consistently translated as “the mind…” By soul Freud meant the psyche…(commonly translated as the Ego, the Id, and the Super-Ego).
In medicine especially in psychoanalysis, we talk a lot about the unconscious mind and the influences it exerts on our lives. As you may already know, our minds can be divided into the conscious and unconscious mind…
“I would say probably 99 percent of our lives is lived without immediate reflection upon a life principle. Rather, we just act…spontaneously…from being a kind of person…
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Jesus Christ.
The heart as Jesus uses it…is not limited to the conscious mind alone but actually mostly the unconscious mind…It means “…the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors.”
Linking the soul with the unconscious aspect of the mind – and unresponsive dead body – results in an elegant (scientifically concise and simple) explanation for how the soul
- requires connection to the body through chemo-electric neurological activity for self-expression and interaction,
- continues in an unconscious – but not necessarily insensate – state when the body ceases to function,
- and through resurrection of the body with neurons is able to live again, i.e. resume self expression and interaction with a social milieu and the environment.
This understanding also leads to the logical conclusion that animals’ expression of self – as pet owners can assure you – is a manifestation of their souls, which after death must also continue to exist in suspended animation.
The only escape is rescue by a force more powerful than death, i.e. the same force that imposed structure on chaotic energy. And that is exactly what the Bible states.
“the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God…Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the…redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.” (Romans 8:19-25)
God Also Has Three Dimensions
Well, at least three.
According to superstring theory, there are at least 10 dimensions in the universe (M-theory actually suggests that there are 11 dimensions to spacetime; bosonic string theories suggest 26 dimensions).
That’s a bit of a mind-boggler: Most people understand the basic three dimensions, and many know that the fourth dimension is time…
For the purposes of this study, I’ll just limit the number of dimensions to the three in which God made mankind.
Even before the New Testament statement that “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), Old Testament depictions of God fit this model of an individual with three dimensions of body, soul and spirit.
- God’s body is what enables material beings to interact with him.
- God’s soul is his unique personhood / personality, “a characteristic way of thinking, feeling, and behaving…attitudes, and opinions and is most clearly expressed in interactions with other people.”
- God’s Spirit is the infinite source of energy which, like electricity or the wind, is not confined to any single time and space like a material body is, but can split off and converge, and can only be perceived by humans in its actions through physical substance.
Body – physical functioning in the confinement of creation and time
“And the LORD [YHVH] appeared unto him [Abraham] in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, My Lord…And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat…And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham…” (Genesis 18)
“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him…And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” (Genesis 32:24-30)
“And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend [i.e. a peer, an equal, in a form compatible with human senses, which we often find in the Old Testament accounts of interactions between God and humans]…And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory [major upgrade in the software from human-like to truly hyper-dimensional God]…
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. [Think of it like encountering any huge force-field. Humans are overloaded by high electrical voltage, radioactive nuclear energy, etc.] And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts [think of a tail of a comet, less intense]: but my face shall not be seen….And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there…
And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped…And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water [obviously his life was maintained by another transfer of energy]…And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai…that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him…And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. [like any sun worshipper absorbing all the rays they can.]” (Exodus 33:11-23, 34:5-8, 28-34)
Soul – will, desire, emotions, intent behind behavior, personality. The unique person,
“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And…it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will… (Genesis 6:5-7)
“And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD…and his anger was kindled.” (Numbers 11:1)
“Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king for the LORD thy God.” (II Chronicles 9:8)
Spirit – energy, empowerment
“And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent…I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth?…have not I the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth…and thou shalt be to him [Pharoah] instead of God. (Exodus 4)
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel…And the LORD came down in a cloud…and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease…And Moses said…would God that ALL the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!” (Numbers 11:16-29)
“Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning…for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil…And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon ALL flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.” (Joel 2:12-32)
“And when the day of Pentecost [Jewish feast] was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak….Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them…this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel…ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off.” (Acts 2:1-33)
Each unique individual is, by definition, a soul. Mortal souls require constant connection between body, soul and spir-it in order to function. Death occurs when the spirit energy goes back to where it came from. Without the life energy provided by in-spir-ation, the body ex-spir-es and the physical components dissociate into the elements of the earth – water, hydrocarbons, iron, sodium, etc. Without the body’s neural networks, the soul is inactivated, although as described above, not destroyed or insensate. It is placed in storage.
Mortality can thus be defined as the condition of the person / soul having only temporary connection to life-giving spirit.
Immortality, then, can be defined as the soul having permanent connection to the spirit.
From this we can logically conclude that immortal, hyper dimensional spirit beings / souls can function independently of the body. Their bodies, being immortal, do not decay, but simply become inanimate when deprived of their spirit. This conclusion is supported by scripture.
“Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth...When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?…who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?...Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?…they stand [motionless] as a garment (heavily weighted with gold and gems). And from the wicked their light / activation / life is withholden…the gates of death been opened.” (Job 38:4-17)
In Job’s account of the days of creation, the indestructible bodies of certain rebel angels were separated from their souls, which remained connected to their spirits. Where did these go? Desperately seeking bodies for self-expression.
“And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep / bottomless pit. And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.” (Luke 8:27-32)
“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first… blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.: (Luke 11:24-28)
Creator God manifests the ultimate freedom of movement, since he is the source of all spirit life.
- “In the beginning was the Word
- and the Word was with God,
- and the Word was God.
- The same was in the beginning with God.
- All things were made [expression of soul’s desire to create] by him…
- And the Word was made flesh [mortal body] and dwelt among us…(John 1:1-2, 14)
“I came forth from [visualize a cloud splitting into two clouds] the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father [the two clouds converging back into one].” (John 16:28)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me…he that hath seen me hath seen the Father…Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake…
- And I will pray
- the Father, and he shall give you
- another Comforter [besides me in the flesh], that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth [acknowledges] him not, neither knoweth him:
but ye know him; for
- he dwelleth WITH you [right now guys – it’s me!],
- and shall be [future tense] IN you. I will not leave you comfortless: I – I! – will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see [perceive] me: because I live, ye shall live also [through the presence of life-giving spirit].
- At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth [chooses to be in unity with] me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him…
If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode [permanent residence] with him…Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I [bound in human flesh as I now am].” (John 14:2-30)
Disunity – The Trinity
However, despite not being described anywhere in the Bible, even in the New Testament, orthodox Christianity teaches the doctrine of the Trinity, God existing as three separate but equal persons.
The doctrine of the Trinity means that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person. These definitions express three crucial truths: (1) the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, (2) each Person is fully God, (3) there is only one God.
The problem with this is obvious once we recognize that the Bible defines a person as a distinct soul, an autonomous individual. Surely we’ve come to understand that there is no such thing as “Separate but Equal.”
Understandably, given its intrinsic contradiction and illogicality, the concept of the Trinity was one of many issues debated hotly by the early Christian theologians. Where did it come from?
We know that new converts clung to many entrenched pagan concepts. These problems were endemic and addressed in many of the New Testament epistles to the new churches. For example:
“…then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am…”(Galatians 4:8-12)
And Paul was not a Trinitarian. The concept of the Trinity, accepted by most Christians today without question, was not established as orthodox Christian doctrine until centuries after the apostles finished writing the New Testament. This alone should raise questions about the legitimacy of this doctrine.
The first defense of the doctrine of the Trinity was in the early third century by the early church father Tertullian…he noted that the majority of the believers in his day found issue with his doctrine…
Among the Non-Trinitarian beliefs, the Sabellianism taught that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are essentially one and the same, the difference being simply verbal, describing different aspects or roles of a single being. For this view Sabellius was excommunicated for heresy in Rome c. 220.
The doctrine of the Trinity is not found in either the New or the Old Testaments.
Judaism traditionally maintains a tradition of monotheism to the exclusion of the possibility of a Trinity. In Judaism, God is understood to be the absolute one, indivisible, and incomparable being who is the ultimate cause of all existence. The idea of God as a duality or trinity is heretical — it is even considered by some to be polytheistic.
If you consider yourself a Bible believing Christian, dare to explore the possibility that Trinitarianism is heretical?
Monotheism is distinguished from henotheism, a religious system in which the believer worships one god without denying that others may worship different gods with equal validity, and monolatrism, the recognition of the existence of many gods but with the consistent worship of only one deity...
“In the ancient Near East the existence of divine beings was universally accepted without question… The question was not whether there is only one elohim, but whether there is any elohim like Yahweh [translated as LORD in the King James Bible]…”
There is evidence that the Israelites before the Babylonian captivity in the 6th century BCE did not adhere to monotheism. Much of this evidence comes from the Bible itself, which records that many Israelites chose to worship foreign gods and idols rather than Yahweh…described by the Yahwist faction collectively as Baals. The oldest books of the Hebrew Bible reflect this competition, as in the books of Hosea and Nahum, whose authors lament the “apostasy” of the people of Israel and threaten them with the wrath of God if they do not give up their polytheistic cults.
When we examine the history of the development of the doctrine of the trinity we find that the concept of a trinity is not at all unique to Christianity. The driving force behind adding the doctrine of the trinity to Christianity was the corruption of the worship of the one true God.
“Christianity did not destroy paganism; it adopted it. . . . From Egypt came the idea of a divine trinity.” And in the book Egyptian Religion, Siegfried Morenz notes: ‘The trinity was a major preoccupation of Egyptian theologians . . . Three gods are combined and treated as a single being, addressed in the singular. In this way the spiritual force of Egyptian religion shows a direct link with Christian theology.’”
Looking even further back into history, we find Hinduism is headed by a trinity.
As is the Babylonian religion and the even older Sumerian sources. “All the ancient nations believed in the Trinity.”
Naturally. The false saviors could only mimic the reality of the true Promised Savior’s unity with the Creator God through a trio of individuals.
More on this theology in later posts, for now just an introduction to the concept of the unity of God, his Word, and his creation.
“For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them…That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:” (John 17:21)
This is so much more, and qualitatively so different from the general conception of “eternal life” being unending existence as ourselves in an immortal body.
Certain words like Christian and church have been used for two thousand years to denote a Gentile religion, or way of achieving life after death, which is different from, and succeeded and replaced the older Jewish religion. Judaism wasn’t even established until about 1,500 years into biblical history, so what was the religion before Judaism?
This study reveals that there is only one way back to Paradise – salvation from death for all humanity, through a savior promised to the first humans who brought death to all humanity.
“…the judgment of God is according to truth…Who will render to every man according to his deeds…Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God….are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin…But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
- the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
- Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood…
- that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” (Romans 2:2-3:26)
What does it mean to “believe in Jesus”, or more specifically, “in his name”? Honestly, growing up in a fundamentalist church which put lots of stock in a faith which was defined as no questions asked, I didn’t know. It wasn’t until I broke away and began questioning everything that it made sense.
Name = attributes, functionality, abilities, powers. Like Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, etc. For example, I am both daughter and mother, but not two different people.
Failure to understand the meanings of names contributes to the confusion over the shared identity of the various manifestations of God as well as the shared identity of various cultural manifestation of believers in the Promised Savior / Messiah / Christ.
Most of all, confusion over the meaning of names is the foundation of the exclusionary doctrine of “Christ”ianity and salvation in the English name of “Jesus”.
The Biblical Savior
Most of what we treat as God’s exclusive names are titles that can apply to other individuals, and multiple titles can apply to a single individual.
- God, elohim or eloah translated God or god / gods. The fact that other beings besides Creator God are also referred to by this title should add significant depth to our understanding of this title. When El is used in scripture to indicate Creator God, we find it modified with his traits to single him out from inferior els. El is also a part of names of humans who identify with him. El is also translated power, indicating the supernatural source of the power.
- Human rulers/judges (I Samuel 2:25) “If one man sin against another, the [human] judge [translated from elohim, God] shall judge him. but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him?” The biblical title of “judge” is basically what we now call executives, because they make decisions (executive function of the brain) and have their orders carried out (executed). Executives have the power to put their plans, actions and laws into effect, Including execution as a death sentence.
- Lesser gods (Exodus 18:11) do have power, but this is different from authority. As we shall see, these hyper-dimensional beings defied their Creator and act on their own plans rather than carry out his orders. There is archeological and anthropological evidence backing up the Bible’s report that these beings are real, not mythological figments of imagination. It is reasonable to label them “ancient aliens” and “ancient astronauts / star travelers”, without making the assumption that they have no Creator. It is more unreasonable to use them to eliminate the concept of a Creator without providing an explanation for their ancient origins.
- “God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods. How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked?…They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes. Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations [in the greatest corporate takeover in history]. (Psalm 82)
- Angels being the common reference for the good hyper dimensional beings, but this term simply means malak / ambassador or messenger representing the melek / king. This function in bridging the hyper dimensions of the heavens with the four dimensions of the human world is readily apparent. As God’s messengers, they are powerful beings. “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and [still, yet] hast crowned him with glory and honour.” (Psalm 8:5-6)
When we understand that “God” = the one who has the power to make and put plans into effect, we realize that the use of this title for the creator of everything introduces him as the most powerful being of all.
- Lord, or Adon in Hebrew, more frequently emphasized as Adonay (O Lord or my Lord). This as a title means ruler or master, someone with authority to influence others’ affairs for good or bad. This descriptor also applies to other beings, who often illegally seize authority through mutiny.
- Humans, such as masters over servants/employees, fathers who in ancient time held absolute authority within families, military superior officers, etc. “O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?” (Jeremiah 2:31)
- The gods who are false, not in the sense of unreal but in the sense of deceitful, promising to empower their followers but actually trapping and destroying them. “Thou shalt make no covenant with…their gods…for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.” (Ex 23:32-33) “O LORD our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name. They are dead [disconnected from the source of life], they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.” (Isaiah 26:13-14)
- Angels / Messengers of Almighty God: “…a thing was revealed unto Daniel…I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude…Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia…then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord…how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me…And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me. Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.“ (Daniel 10)
The existence of other created gods and lords is why we address the God of creation as “Most High God, King of kings and Lord of lords.” What makes him unique among all the gods is that he alone is creator and giver of life.
“Thus saith [the] God [ha El, singular] the LORD [YHVH], he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein…I am the LORD: [Yhvh] that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:5-8)
- YHVH is the exclusive, unique and personal name of the God of gods and Lord of lords in Hebrew.
Because there are no written vowels to clue us into the correct pronunciation, it is written and pronounced variously as Yahweh (you’ll see this in Strong’s Concordance), Yehoowah, or Jehovah (in the King James at a time, oddly enough, when the letter J had just recently been introduced into the English alphabet). This name is so highly respected by conservative Judaism that it is not pronounced at all, hence no verbal tradition handed down and the substitution of “LORD” (all caps) which carried over even in English scriptures including most of the occurrences in the King James Bible.
It is first given to humanity when God introduces himself to Moses, in a variety of manifestations simultaneously. We can understand its retroactive appearance in the book of Genesis from Moses’ authorship of that earlier history.
“Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
- And the angel of the LORD / YHVH appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush [more on this person in the next post]
- God / elohim called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said…I am the God / elohe of thy father, the God / elohe of Abraham, the God /elohe of Isaac, and the God / elohe of Jacob…
- And the LORD / YHVH said…Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
- And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?
- And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; [Trust me]…
- And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name [attributes, characteristics – the god of water, lord of the flies, the god of war]? what shall I say unto them?
- And God said unto Moses, [and we may fairly suppose he shrugs at that point, expressing “What can I say?”] I Am Who I Am, [ehyeh aser ehyeh]…Thus…say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you. [This isn’t really helping Moses who has no background in physics.]
At a minimum, this reply is expressing his uniqueness which can’t be explained or understood by humans, possibly referencing a permanent state of present time as opposed to humans’ linear timeline of past to future, i.e. timeless, eternal, self-existent Being.
In a thought-provoking new paper, a physicist suggests the whole universe could be a single neural network—a competing “theory of everything” that could unite quantum and classical mechanics, he says.
If this is true…it would mean pretty enormous things for the nature of the universe…
The root problem with…a theory…that defines the very nature of the universe itself – is that it usually ends up replacing one proxy-for-god with another…
In this paper we discussed a possibility that the entire universe on its most fundamental level is a neural network. This is a very bold claim. We are not just saying that the artificial neural networks can be useful for analyzing physical systems or for discovering physical laws, we are saying that this is how the world around us actually works…
If we’re all nodes in a neural network, what’s the network’s purpose?
The Bible presents YHVH as the neural network – the soul, the personhood – by which all things consist, with the purpose of forming a family of loved ones.
“the invisible God…all things were created by him, and for him…and by him all things consist…And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind [soul] by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled [brought into unity with his soul].” (Colossian 1:15-17,21)
Can that be so hard for us humans to understand? The old philosophical question can be reframed as “If God speaks and there is no-one to hear him, is there any sound?” Carrying through this concept – if God is love, but there is no-one to love, can he love, i.e. be loving, in reality? Anyone else besides me experience what’s called unrequited love? It does take more than one for love to exist.
Which leads to an interesting question – did God’s soul develop, like humans’ do, as he interacted in the social milieu and environment he created? Did he in fact create this in order to self-transcend, just like humans mature when they marry and have children? Psychologically, it makes sense.
I’ll let the reader wrestle with that one for now. Back to God as Being / I Am.
With the juxtaposition of “moreover” in the passage, we can literally connect “I Am” with “YHVH.”
And God said moreover...Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel,
- the LORD / YHVH God of your fathers,
- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” (Exodus 3:15)
We can’t hit on “YHVH” and skim over the rest of the declaration. YHVH’s name forever, his permanent memorial establishing his identity, is that he was the Creator God / Power behind Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and that this is the basis for future generations to trust in his word.
Put it in context! Abraham, Isaac and Jacob weren’t Jewish. The Jews are by definition the children / followers of Jacob, who were led, therefore named, for the most part by Ju-dah.
What marks out Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as role models for all nationalities is that they lived out their faith in the Creator God of gods in the Cradle of Civilization at the dawn of the post-flood civilizations. Like any memorable story passed down for generations and millennia, their lives were legendary for overcoming insurmountable problems through the power of a hero.
And unlike the stories of Marduk and Horus, theirs were demonstrably true. The children – followers, nation – of Isr-El – the Prince of the God El – lived among their pagan neighbors. Their lives and histories were an open book. They were chosen by El, not to be pampered, but to suffer like their pagan neighbors suffered who were brutalized by their demon theocracies, in order to demonstrate the saving power of their uniquely merciful, loving and right-acting God. They were the People Chosen to be a beacon of light in a dark night, a lighthouse marking the path to safety in the storm.
And faith in action speaks so much louder than words, and reverberates throughout eternity. More on this in later posts, but this is absolutely key to understanding God’s identity so just hold that thought for now. Certainly God establishes this trail of thought.
- “Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
- Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out (Mesopotamia, the glories of Babel/Babylon), they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
- By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
- By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau [warring brothers] concerning things to come.
- By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. [after his entire family had been forced to emigrate from the promised land and were refugees in the World Empire claiming dominion over that neighboring territory.]” (Hebrews 11:11-21)
The Exodus is not just a fascinating story. It takes up four entire books for a reason. It is the seminal redemption event that drives all the rest of human history. More on this in a later post. For now, just focus that when God finally revealed his secret name to Israel’s children / descendants / tribe, the circumstances proved that
- invoking the name does establish a relationship,
- and that believing in the name does grant access to power over humanly insolvable problems and even death,
- which must be acted upon in faith to achieve salvation.
“Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh…I am the LORD: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.
- And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.
- And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.
- Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:” (Exodus 6:1-6)
The next dialogue between Moses and the LORD confirms that “name” is equivalent to “way”, equating “who we are” with “what we do,” and defining God’s character and attributes – his soul.
“And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet
- thou hast said, I know thee by name…
- Now therefore, I pray thee…shew me now thy way, that I may know [be united with] thee…
And the LORD descended in the cloud [heads-up, this is major foreshadowing], and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD…
- The LORD / YHVH
- The Lord / Boss
- God / Spirit Being
- merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,
- and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, [but unlike physical epigenetics, cutting it short only] unto the third and to the fourth generation. “ (Exodus 33:12-13 – 34:5-8)
Understanding that “who we are” is equivalent to “what we do” adds to our understanding of the development of the soul, with its implications for the permanent state of the soul after the death of the mortal body. And it therefore follows that believing on an eternal being is the first step in identifying with that being, both now and in the eternal state of the soul.
Regardless of the name by which he is called – God, El, I AM, YHVH, Shiloh – the power is not in the sound formed by the mouth. The power of salvation is in
- the soul’s belief in, and subsequent identification with, i.e. connection to, this supernatural Being’s attributes and actions on behalf of powerless mankind,
- and is achieved when humans respond with actions demonstrating faith in the Being’s promises of empowerment.
“I am not ashamed of the gospel of Messiah / Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek [non-Jew]. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17)
The man who English speaking peoples call Jesus claimed to be YHVH’s agent of salvation, promised to all humanity at the beginning of time.
- Jesus (English) = Iesous (Greek) = Yehoshua (Hebrew) = Yhvh is salvation
The transformation from the Hebrew Yehoshua to the English Jesus is most easily recognized in comparison with other biblical names compounding YHVH in the ending of the name with a contraction of iah, or fairly recently in the English language, jah, or in the beginning of the name with Yeho or Jeho. Note, in an upset to the King James Only Movement, the original 1611 King James Bible spelled all words that now contain a “J” with an “I”. “The pronunciation Jehovah was unknown until 1520…it was contested by Le Mercier, J. Drusius, and L. Capellus, as against grammatical and historical propriety.”
The alternative letters, and alternative pronunciations of the same letters, used by different languages for the Hebrew “Y” is readily apparent with the common name “John”, such as Ioann, Jan, Giovane, Ian, Juan, Wannes, Sean, Jose, Hans, Hermes. Hermes?! We’ll get back to him in a later post.
- Abi-jah: My Father is YHVH
- Eli-jah: My God is YHVH
- J/Yerem-iah: Exalted by YHVH
- J/Yeho-ram: YHVH is exalted – note how two names can have the same root words with a twist on the subject of the action
- Isa-iah: Salvation is YHVH – from the roots יָשַׁע(yasha‘) meaning “to save” and יָה (yah)
- J(eh)o-shua: YHVH is Salvation – English form of the Hebrew name יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yehoshu’a): from יְהוֹ (yeho and יָשַׁע(yasha‘ meaning “to save“
This directly links the Savior in the New Testament to the saving God of the Old Testament, not only of Israel but of the pre-Israelite ancient patriarchs like Abel and Noah.
- I Am that I Am
- “Then spake Yahweh’s Savior / Yeshua / Jesus again unto them, saying..if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
- Then said they unto him, Who art thou?
- And Yahweh’s Savior / Yeshua / Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning [the Son of God John 1:34]…I proceeded forth and came from Theos / God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me…
- Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?…
- Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I Am.” (John 8:12-58)
- “Then spake Yahweh’s Savior / Yeshua / Jesus again unto them, saying..if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
- Christ (English) = Xristos (Greek) = Messiah (Hebrew) = the Anointed One, which is to say the Designated, Appointed, Chosen or Consecrated One. This may be best translated into English as “Chosen One” for the purpose of salvation, promised to the first humans as “the seed of the woman“.
“And the Lord God said unto the serpent…I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head.” (Genesis 3:14-15)
“And thou shalt put them [official garments] upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.” (Exodus 28:40-41)
“Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Yaweh’s Consecrated Savior / Messiah Yeshua / Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that chose / appointed him…” (Hebrews 1:1-2)
- Church (English) = ekklesia (Greek) = qahal (Hebrew) = congregation, convocation, assembly of believers. This may indicate an Old or New Testament gathering of believers, a local sub-assembly or the total aggregate of all believers from all time.
“This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us.” (Acts 7:37-38)
“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Yahweh’s Savior / Yeshua / Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.” (Hebrews 23:22-24)
Christ Jesus is the ultimate expression of the unity of Lord God YHVH.
“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality [rule, authority] and power [godhood]:” (Colossians 2:6-10)
The man called Yeshua / YHVH’s Savior stated that that he would not come back to earth in his resurrection power and glory until his co-rulers acknowledge him by proclaiming his identity through his abilities. As per the recognizable, because documented, historical pattern, this will be a miraculous, Earth physics-defying rescue from tyranny first documented with Noah’s family through the world-destroying flood, then with the Israelite-led multinational Exodus from Egypt.
This man called Yeshua was claiming to be Almighty Creator God Himself
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, [but despite this] how often would I have gathered thy children together [to protect you], even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your household / people is left unto you desolate / unprotected. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name [i.e. abilities] of the LORD / YHVH.” (Matthew 23:37-39)
This why Christ Jesus / YHVH’s Anointed Savior is the only name that saves.
“The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son…Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And he shall send Jesus Christ / YHVH’s Anointed Savior…which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began…Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name / attribute of power under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 3:13-19, 4:12)
The name that that empowers eternal life is the source of life, YVHV / Creator. When we understand that the name, power and identity of the man we call Jesus Christ is not unique to him but sources back to YHVH / Creator, then we should likewise understand that the religion we call Christianity is not unique but sources back to Creation. Believing in the Creator and putting faith for permanent restoration of life in the one who gave life in the first place is only logical.
- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made by him, and without him was nothing made that was made. (John 1:1-2)
- to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12)
- many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. (John 2:23)
- the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. (John 10:25)
- And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (John 20:30-31)
When we know the translation we understand why invoking the name of Jesus Christ it is equivalent to calling on the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19)
“…Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ.” (Acts 2:38)
What, exactly, does baptism accomplish, and how?
The Greek word “baptizo” as used in Mark 1:4 ( “And so John came, baptizing in the desert region . . .” ) was very common among Greek-speaking people; it is used in every period of Greek literature and was applied to a great variety of matters, including the most familiar acts of everyday life. Greek speakers and hearers understood the word at the time John was preaching; it had no doubtful meaning. It meant what we express by the Latin word ‘immerse’…
The practice of baptism in pagan religions seems to have been based on a belief in the purifying properties of water. In ancient Babylon, according to the Tablets of Maklu, water was important as a spiritual cleansing agent in the cult of Enke [Lucifer, see post Seed of the Serpent], lord of Eridu. In Egypt, the Book of Going Forth by Day contains a treatise on the baptism of newborn children, which is performed to purify them of blemishes acquired in the womb. Water, especially the Nile’s cold water, which was believed to have regenerative powers, is used to baptize the dead in a ritual based on the Osiris myth. Egyptian cults also developed the idea of regeneration through water. The bath preceding initiation into the cult of Isis seems to have been more than a simple ritual purification; it was probably intended to represent symbolically the initiate’s death to the life of this world by recalling Osiris’ drowning in the Nile. [Emphasis added.]
In the cult of Cybele, a baptism of blood was practiced in the rite of the Taurobolium: where one was covered with the blood of a bull…A well-known inscription attests that he who has received baptism of blood has received a new birth in eternity. However, the fact that this baptism was repeated periodically shows that the idea of complete spiritual regeneration was not associated with it.
The property of immortality was also associated with baptism in the ancient Greek world. A bath in the sanctuary of Trophonion procured for the initiate a blessed immortality even while in this world. The mystery religions of that period often included ablution rites of either immersion or a washing of the body for the purposes of purification or initiation. Other concepts said to have been associated with these forms of cultic baptisms included the transformation of one’s life, the removal of sins, symbolic representation...a new beginning, spiritual regeneration. It is believed that all ancient religions recognized some form of spiritual cleansing, renewal or initiation that was accomplished through a washing or immersion in water.
The liturgical use of water was common in the Jewish world. The Law of Moses required ablutions (washings)…
Toward the beginning of the Christian era, the Jews adopted…the custom of baptizing proselytes seven days after their circumcision. A series of specific interrogations made it possible to judge the real intentions of the candidate who wished to adopt the Jewish religion. After submitting to these interrogations, he was circumcised and later baptized before witnesses. In the baptism, he was immersed naked in a pool of flowing water; when he rose from the pool, he was a true son of Israel. After their baptism, new converts were allowed access to the sacrifices in the Temple.
Legalistic Jews and pagan Gentiles alike understood the meaning and necessity of baptism preached by the Apostles. This makes sense given that all alternative methods of obtaining eternal life must have some basic concepts in common. It is just our spirit-less society that has lost the meaning.
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” (Romans 6:3)
This can be considered symbolic, but no. Humans in fact create our own future by our actions. A murderer creates his future in prison, a college student creates her future as a leader in society, and mortal actions transcend time and create our immortal spiritual future.
“if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart / soul man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10)
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death…Knowing this, that our old [mortal] man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:4-11)
“ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus…as many of you as have been baptized into Christ…There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26-28)
And this is what saves us. Unity with the source of life. Uniting with Christ Jesus / YHVH’s Chosen Savior unites us with the Creator, the source of all power over body, soul, spirit, life and death.
“And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them…by the power / name of YHVH’s Promised Savior…whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.” (Acts 4:7-10)
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:13-14)
However, this does not empower us to fulfill our goals. Note, in the same passage apparently teaching the prosperity gospel the objective for empowerment is given – glorifying the Father in the Son. It’s that corporation concept – all the individuals working together as one glorify God / the source of all power the Father / the Authority.
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in YHVH’s Appointed Savior / Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:5-11)
If you’ve ever read or watched historical drama you should be able to vividly capture the concept of defeated lords bending the knee and submitting to the King of kings who is the rightful heir to the throne of all the kingdoms. Humans have only two options – acknowledge him as Creator and Sustainer Lord and live in peace with him, or rebel against his authority and resources for life, and die.
In magic, invoking a powerful being’s secret name gives access to that being’s power “to do”. Even in mundane life, knowing your doctor’s secret cell phone number, which I had for the doctor for whom I worked, can empower you. Without being blocked or stalled, I could immediately gain his authorization to accomplish my plans.
With this in mind, the interaction between notoriously sly Jacob and God takes on added meaning. Jacob is trying to gain power over God by learning his secret name, which explains why God did not give it to him.
“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day…And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?” (Genesis 32:24-30)
We can recognize that Manoah was also being clever when he asked for the angel’s name. Manoah lacked the faith to believe God’s promise, and wanted the standard pagan enforcement plan to ensure the higher power makes good on his promise.
“And there was a certain man…whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren…And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her…thou shalt conceive, and bear a son [Samson]…and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines…And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name…? And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret? (Judges 13:1-18)
With this background, we understand that believers who receive a secret name are granted some special powers. This concept should be well understood in our current culture.
“To him that overcometh will I give…a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.” (Revelation 2:17)
I don’t have personal experience in magic in its many forms because I do believe that sharing names and contact information with spirit beings does in fact create two-way connections. And, as another nonmaterial experience – on-line dating – proves, you can’t be in control of what happens next. We need to be careful about invoking, even unwittingly, names of spirit beings in activities like karate and yoga.
There is only one name in which we can safely trust to accomplish a good thing for us.
“For the Lord God [Adonay Yhvh] will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up. Who is among you that feareth the LORD [Yhvh] , that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD [Yhvh], and stay upon his God [Elohaw]. (Isaiah 50:7-10)
